Hunan Mao Jian from Harney and Sons

Style: Mao Jian Green Tea – Region: Hunan, China

70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Apr. 29th, 2017

I tend to like Mao Jian teas a lot, and I still liked this one, but it was my least favorite example of it that I've tried. It was unexpectedly smooth but lacked edge or bite, and I think this bite is one of the things that I most appreciate about this type of tea.

Dry leaf is wiry and curved, very dark green. Qui...

Premium Green Decaf Tea from Stash Tea

Style: Green Tea – Region: China

80 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 18th, 2017

The freshly-opened teabag has a strong smell when dry, which is unusual for a decaf. Even though it isn't particularly complex, the aroma is fresh and grassy.

The tea brews into a dark amber-green and smells very vegetal, like freshly harvested asparagus. Both color and aroma remind me of the "special gunpowder" gre...

Chun Mee from Harney and Sons

Style: Chun Mee – Region: China

69 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 5th, 2017

Enjoyable but not amazing, not really standing out much among this style of tea. Smoother and less acidic than the norm for chun mee, but also perhaps a bit more boring too.

The dry leaf has a dusty vegetal aroma, slightly smoky, with a few sweet notes, kind of what I'd expect from this type of tea.

Brewed, this...

Organic Dragon Well Tea from Wei-Chuan

Style: Dragon Well (Long Jing) – Region: China

75 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Apr. 4th, 2017

The tea in the sachets is a mixture of broken and whole leaves, so the first appearance is of tea that would be mediocre if sold loose. The dry tea is quite fragrant, though, smelling fresh and grassy.

I typically steep green tea at 170° for four minutes. With decent quality tea, this generally gives a comfortable ...

Emerald Green from The Tao of Tea

Style: Green Tea – Region: Fujian, China

80 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 19th, 2017

Also known as "San Bei Xiang" or "Three Cups" because of the different fragrances this tea provides with each infusion. I'm a little confused about the origin because the website says it is from Ningde in Fujian province but the tin I bought says it is from Zhejiang province. Perhaps Tao of Tea switched locations it ...

Bilouchun Green Tea from Tea King of China (Starway)

Mar. 14th, 2017

This is presumably the same tea that the previous reviewers tasted, but it's packaged in individual 6g pouches (24 packets totalling 150g). At $10, I paid a little more than the previous reviewers did, as well.

That said, this is now one of my favorite green teas. I find it best with a long steep in cooler water (4-...

Organic Green Dragon from Mighty Leaf Tea

Style: Dragon Well (Long Jing) – Region: China

67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jan. 17th, 2017

I was eager to try this because it was the only pure green tea in tea bags sold by Mighty Leaf, other than their hojicha which is roasted and does not taste at all like a green tea.

I wasn't crazy about this tea; if I had to divide all dragon wells into "good dragonwell" vs. "bad dragonwell" this one almost falls be...

Emperor's Clouds and Mist Green Tea from Teavana

Style: Clouds & Mist (Yun Wu) – Region: China

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Dec. 29th, 2016

This is a very nice tea. The trick is to rein in it's flavor, because it is VERY strong.

I typically brew half the amount of leaf I would normally. Cast iron, 1.5 - 2 minutes. Keep water cooler (75-80*C).

1st steep: Vegetal and grassy with a hint of sweetness and a touch of smokiness. An intense freshness.

Aug. 17th, 2016

I am a big fan of pinhead gunpowder (Green) tea - and it is fun to watch it steep/brew as all the little balls unfurl. This one by Stash is moderately priced. Pinhead is never (or not that I have seen) sold in bags/sachets as you need it loos to watch it work its magic.

I drink this neat - (Hot) or possibly with a...

May. 28th, 2016

I loved this, it's a strong tea, nutty and toasty, but with deep vegetal undertones. I did not tire of drinking it and I could imagine happily drinking this every day.

The dry leaf has a potent aroma that evolves quite a lot as I smell it. It starts off a bit in-your-face, and I found myself slightly taken aback b...

Love the tea but hate the new plastic sleeves that the bags are packed in. First of all, it's plastic. Then one wrong move in pulling the tab, and you're searching for a tool to open a tea bag packet! I'll stick with Celestial Seasons till they dispense with the ridiculous packaging.

This is an easy-drinking green tea with grassy notes an a faint whiff of herbs (I dunno - but I get an herbaceous quality if you let it steep long enough.) Must steep at least 3 minutes as it brews up "pale". Good hot and OK on ice. I live this one better hot. Super-mild. As with all Harney & Sons - beautifully pac...

Too expensive to buy by the bag ($2.39 plus tax in Starbucks for a Tall) but very good green tea and worth buying a box.

Green but not grassy, light and fresh tasting. Easy to drink hot.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tea, all the way from the beautiful tea leaves to the aftertaste. I wanted to try Tai Ping Hou Kui due to its intriguing leaf shape. This tea has an interesting blend of flavors and aromas. The aroma is sweet, floral, and slightly grassy. The taste, however, is an interesting blend of astringency and sweetness. There is almost a combination of floral notes and vegetal astringency. A very interesting combination that I am not a fan of. I prefer to ha...

I greatly enjoyed this green tea from Upton Tea Imports. The liquor is a beautiful pale yellow. The aroma is very vegetal and grassy, although the taste is not as much. The taste has hints of grass and astringency, with a smoky aftertaste. There are also slight hints of sweetness.

Pure Green Tea (Original) from Ahmad Tea

Dec. 8th, 2015

The bagged tea of this type from Ahmad comes in individually wrapped bags in a 20 pack, and also in 50 circular bags in a larger pack. I found that the circular bags from Ahmad have a larger amount of tea than the individually wrapped bags. This is a straightforward Chinese green tea, but it is mellow and not astringe...

China Gunpowder from Tea Forte

Style: Gunpowder Green Tea – Region: Zhejiang, China

67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 23rd, 2015

I like Tea Forte - and their packaging is excellent. But it's what's inside that sachet that counts - and this Green "Gunpowder" style tea is delicious with a mild, (generic?) grassy flavor that I happen to enjoy. Is it the best green ever? Not by a long-shot - but it is solid and easy to drink (I do it unsweetened,...

An inexpensive tea of surprisingly good quality.

Dry leaf smells wonderful, suggesting fresh and savory qualities of some higher-grade green teas, but also reminding me a lot of raw Pu-erh.

Upon brewing though, there's not as much aroma in the cup as the dry leaf suggests. The brewed cup is light in color and bo...

Special Reserve Green Tea from Shang Tea

Style: Green Tea – Region: Fujian, China

67 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Nov. 9th, 2015

I love Shang tea. It's probably the best tea shop that you can buy from in the Midwest. This particular tea though- is for a very particular kind of person. It has an incredibly potent and bitter taste to it if you steep it like a normal tea. You have to make sure and use boiling water, extra amounts of the tea, and on...

70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 14th, 2015

Not bad, but a bit astringent (almost bitter) to my taste. It has a refreshing quality, too. This tea reminds me a lot of the teas I drank while living in Japan (though it's a Chinese tea).

Certainly worth giving a try. I always like the quality of Rishi teas.

Jul. 1st, 2015

A nice green tea! It has a quality that is both vegetable and not-quite-baked. I'm not entirely sure how to describe this. It tastes similar to teas that I had while in Japan, and which I enjoyed very much there. It seems to have cause a slight tickle in my throat the way that some green teas can. I still need to figur...

Style: Green Tea – Region: Zhejiang, China

87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 26th, 2015

My first impression of this tea reminds me of a mild dragonwell. It has a very light liquor (almost clear) while somehow still having a full mouth of flavor and a wonderfully pleasant aroma. The taste is very vegetal, and reminds me of cut grass with perhaps a hint of spinach. The taste is light, refreshing, and coolin...
