Matcha Green Tea from Green Foods
Style: Matcha – Region: Japan70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 1st, 2015
Not a bad matcha. I used a little milk and think this would be even better with all milk instead out water. I like this kind of drink creamy. Also felt it needed some sweetness, so I added honey. This set of flavors blended very well. I'm looking forward to trying this tea a number of different ways.

Dec. 30th, 2014
This is my first review...ever..so cut me some slack:
I am new to pursuing specific qualities in tea - after being let down by my favorite big-name tea brand, I am trying out teas that are farmed more responsibly, and processed more simply. Mellow Monk meets those initial standards, as far as I can tell, sans trave...
Sencha Kagoshima from Octavia Tea
Style: Sencha – Region: Kagoshima, Japan73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 21st, 2014
This sencha has large pieces of intact leaf, and looks and smells like a very typical sencha.
Brews up a yellow-green cup, so vibrant in color that it looks almost like it is glowing.
The aroma is spinachy and seaweedy, and the flavor is strongly umami, slightly sweet, and slightly bitter. There's a hint of corn...
Hojicha Dark Roast from Octavia Tea
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Dec. 19th, 2014
An unusually smooth hojicha, not the strongest aroma, I thought on the weak side.
The dry leaf (which is a mix of stem and leaf) looks fairly roasted, but the aroma only has a light amount of roast. Instead, there are some interesting fruity notes, as well as some of the vegetal and grain-like qualities I associate...
Matcha Cafe Blend (Sweetened) from Bare Tea
Style: Matcha – Region: Japan70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Dec. 11th, 2014
I loved matcha in Japan, but I really need more practice brewing it. This matcha tastes of good quality and has a proper level of sweetness (not overdone). I like it, but I need to try it more to determine how best I like it. I do know that mixing in a little milk first to make a paste before adding the hot water makes...

The aroma of this Houjicha is fun, it starts off as sweet roasted marshmallows and a touch of campfire, it then transitions to toasted sesame, burnt grass, and lastly a tiny wisp of distant sea air. I very much so had a vision pop into my mind of roasted marshmallows on a beach, the fire made from driftwood and sea gra...

This was a great tea! It has a hearty vegetable flavor satisfied my taste buds like no other, and the smell was fantastic. I also loved the cheery bright green color!
I made one brew of this tea, letting it steep for 3 minutes, as suggested. I didn't get a chance to try other steepings, hopefully in the future I...
Sen-Cha from Takaokaya
Style: Sencha – Region: Shizuoka, Japan60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Nov. 11th, 2014
Not a bad sencha. Not a great one either. This is the sort of tea you drink on a daily basis without any sort of sentimental attachment, until the brand implements changes years on and you find yourself nostalgic for the old packaging of your youth.

Thanks to Brytta Sopword for the sample!
A low-grade sencha that is remarkably enjoyable for what it is.
Flavor is bold, a pleasant bitterness (easily becoming too much if oversteeped), and slight sweet, sour, and savory qualities. Aroma toasty, with a strong warming quality, but also with vegetal notes and fain...
Sencha Premium Grade from McNulty's Tea & Coffee
Style: Green Tea – Region: Japan60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 15th, 2014
I hope I'm reviewing the correct tea. The bag has no label, but it tastes like green tea and looks like sencha. This tea was given to me as a gift, so I'm giving the 3/5 score on the value purely as a placeholder.
This tea has a pleasant, smooth flavor, and even though I steeped it for something like 5 minutes it la...
#12 Shira-Ore Stem Tea With Matcha from Kurihara Tea
Style: Kukicha – Region: Fukuoka, Japan83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 10th, 2014
The aroma of the dry leaves is so green! There are notes of cut grass, fresh spinach, and an underlying sweet nuttiness, the aroma reminds me of the smell of summer when everything is in full growth.
The first steep is delightfully mellow, not to be boring but the tea tastes pretty much exactly as it smells, no myst...
Sencha (Sen-cha), Loose-leaf from Yamamotoyama
Style: Sencha – Region: Japan57 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 5/5
Sep. 30th, 2014
I found this at $5.75 for a 7 ounce bag, making it some of the cheapest loose leaf tea I've ever found. Excellent value!
That said, unfortunately, the tea goes bitter far too easily. The leaves are cut very small, allowing it to diffuse quickly. At the bottom of my cup are dark green fannings that couldn't be strain...
Gyokuro from Maeda-en
Style: Gyokuro – Region: Japan80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Sep. 27th, 2014
I should state off the bat that this was my first gyokuro, and I haven't had the chance to try any other brands since. Furthermore, gyokuro needs to be brewed at a lower temperature than most teas; the first time I made it I didn't realize this, and the tea wound up tasting rather bitter. Properly brewed, however, ther...

The same things that I said about ITO-EN's hojicha apply to this brand--except for the fact that I enjoy this one just a bit better. I find there to be a bit more strength in this version, and I'm a person that seeks out strong tea.
This product listing is slightly inaccurate, however; this is not a loose tea. I do...
Ureshino Tama Ryokucha from Wegmans
Style: Tamaryokucha (Guricha) – Region: Saga, Japan87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5

Very good tea. It has a slightly nutty, very vegetal scent and taste, which I love. The dry aroma is pungent and pleasant in the same way as the brewed tea. It tastes somewhere between a gyokuro and China Green Tips, by Tazo (if I'm remembering those flavors accurately). It hasn't caused me any throat irritation the wa...

Very solid, smooth tea! The vegetal scent and flavor reminded me of tea in Japan, and I appreciated the bright green tint of the water. I've enjoyed a few cups of it already, but want to brew it again tomorrow, then give a fuller review once I've really had time to sit down and enjoy it.
Update: A nice sitting down,...
Japanese Sencha from Bare Tea
Style: Sencha – Region: Japan87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5

Excellent sencha! This tastes exactly like the tea I had while living in Japan. Pleasantly grassy, smoothly savory with a light sweetness. Goes great with food too. Simply great tea. Highly recommended!
Each bag has quite a lot of tea in it, so I definitely recommend both a relatively short steep time and repeated i...
Gyokuro Green Tea from Arbor Teas
Style: Gyokuro – Region: Japan87 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5

This is only the second gyokuro tea I've tried. Its flavor is exactly the way I remember Teavana's, making both of these excellent--but Arbor's far less expensive. So glad I was able to try this one!
The flavor is complex, balanced, and delicious. It naturally tastes a bit sweet so that adding any sweetener would be...
Sencha of the Summer Sun from Obubu Tea
Style: Sencha – Region: Kyoto, Japan87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 20th, 2014
The aroma of the vibrantly green leaves is sweet, a blend of sweet hay, grass, and spinach. There is a touch of seaweed at the finish giving the tea a bit of that sea-side aroma that I so love in teas. It might be the name playing havoc with my sense, but the aroma really does remind me of summer.
The first steep i...
Matcha Japanese Green Tea (Imperial Grade Matcha) from Teavana

So overpriced - but very good Matcha - with a bright green taste - a bit grassy but not bad. Elegantly packaged as is Teavana's Style - you pay for all that packaging.

Relatively inexpensive among Gyokuro, especially for being organic. Pleasant, and easy to brew, but less aromatic than other samples of this type of tea I've tried.
Very long, straight leaves, very dark green. Dry leaf has a pleasant aroma, similar to some sencha, and a bit nondescript.
Brews up a cup that isn'...
Gyokuro Imperial Green Tea from Teavana
Style: Gyokuro – Region: Japan70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jun. 17th, 2014
Very nice green tea. It has a flavor somewhere between nutty and also fruity, if green tea were a fruit. Naturally sweet enough, it needs no sweetener. You'll want to steep it briefly and drink it somewhat quickly, as the taste can go bitter even after it's done steeping.
I only wish the price was lower.
Top Leaf™ Green Tea from Mellow Monk

Picked this tea up on the recommendation of a friend, found it a good value.
Tea leaves are small, rolled, deep dark emerald green. Put 1tsp in about 8-10oz of water around 175 degrees F for brewing, for around 1:30.
Tea is very sweet, grassy, and fresh tasting. More of a green color than the cloudy yellow of som...
Hojicha from Adagio Teas

Thanks E. Alex Gerster for this sample! The leaf looks dark in color, but smells greener or lighter-roasted.
Brews up a dark amber color, lighter than I expected, with a greener character. Flavor is crisp, with a little bitterness or bite. There's only a light roast evident in the aroma when drinking, and there a...
Top Leaf™ Green Tea from Mellow Monk
Style: Sencha – Region: Kumamoto, Japan92 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
May. 16th, 2014
This is a mellow tea, and probably my favorite sencha I've ever tried, and I also think it is one that would have broad appeal. I found it very easy to brew, pleasantly aromatic, and relatively smooth in flavor, in every incarnation. I also found that it lasted through multiple infusions better than any other Japanes...
