White Peony from Simply Good Tea

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: China

33 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 1/5
Dec. 7th, 2015

This is a late review that I somehow forgot to post; the company is now closed, and the tea wasn't my favorite, but why not share?

Another dud, the second one in a batch of teas that I've otherwise thought offered solid quality and excellent value.

The dry leaf looks unusually wiry for a white peony or bai mu dan...

This is a great tea for most people. Green tea can be more of an acquired taste and red(black) tea can be heavy on the tannins, but this white peony is right in the middle of tea flavors. Both the smell and the taste are more floral than other teas, so beware if you decide to steep it extra strong. You can steep the te...

Very nice tea. I enjoy white teas, especially silver needle, but that can be expensive for daily consumption. This tea, on the other hand, is more affordable and has that distinctly white tea taste. It is not as sweet or smooth as silver needle, but it is nevertheless very light, delicate, and simple.

I prepared 5g ...

This is an excellent white tea. The aroma is very faint, light, and floral. The taste complements the aroma beautifully with it's lightness and delicateness. It is quite sweet and fruity, but not in an overwhelming manner. There is not a bit of bitterness anywhere, but just smooth and simple sweetness. The taste and ar...

The aroma of the fluffy leaves is pretty mild, you really need to sniff hard to detect much of an aroma, but when you do there are notes of cucumbers, melons, and a hint of paper and sage.

The taste is, well, you know, it is ok. Nothing to jump up and down about, it starts off with mild notes of cucumber and celery,...

Silver Needle from Adagio Teas

May. 4th, 2015

For some this tea is probably perfect. They can likely enjoy the muted spectrum of flavor and scent that is mostly lost on me. As much as I’d like to be in their camp, I need the volume on my white tea to by dialed just a bit higher. That said, what I do taste and smell is not bad. This is an enjoyable, if muted, tea...

I tend not to like Silver Needle teas, but I found this one more interesting than most. It was my favorite silver needle yet from China (I strongly prefer the African-grown versions).

Dry leaf is mildly aromatic, and upon brewing, the cup initially smells like a typical silver needle of good quality, with the typic...

Feb. 17th, 2015

A very typical silver needle, enjoyable, good quality, and true to the style, but this is a style of tea I'm not a huge fan of, especially given its high price.

Brewed 3 minutes as recommended, this was too weak for me. I preferred a single, long infusion of about 12-15 minutes.

Very low in astringency, leading ...

Excellent! Another sample served at Velvet Sky Bakery.

The leaf was rather broken, but this may have been due to being packed in the small sample container: this is a very fragile, large-leafed tea.

Brews up a clear, light-colored cup that is on the delicate side for a white peony. Aroma is floral, with notes o...

The dry cake smelled, to me, precisely of rich, unscented pipe tobacco—Scottish shag, or an English blend with Turkish leaf. Once brewed, the liquor is a perfect amber-honey tone, and the aroma has the sharpness of honey accompanied by a vaguely floral quality. The honey note follows into the taste of the liquor—mu...

Eh, this one wasn't bad, not my favorite though. I didn't notice anything outstanding here. I was expecting more of a floral smell than it produced, and more flavor. It reminded me of a light green tea, similar to what Emily suggested.

I will give extra points for this being organic!

As a pure white tea, this wasn't bad, but it wasn't a flavor to get me excited. It didn't taste bitter to me, which was a plus, but overall it was fairly nondescript. (Or maybe I'm missing nuances because I need to internalize the language of tea better?)

I'm not sure what else to say about it. I'm sure people who p...

5 minute (long end) steep...smell is mostly vegetal with hint of fruit like raspberry...guess that's the peach...as one who favors stronger teas this isn't my "cup of tea"...too light...flavor itself isn't bad..more vegetal than peachy though.....just needs boldness!!

I loved this. I love Shou Mei, and this was the first example of it I tried in compressed form. It was definitely one of the best samples of Shou mei that I've tried.

The dry leaf of this cake has a moderate smell of dried fruit, with a hint of fermenting fruit in there. It's not the most aromatic of TeaVivre's t...

The aroma is sweet, like a rich blend of muscatel and honey, in fact it reminds me a bit of honey wine (specifically the Grecian Honeyed Wine I used to make when I could imbibe in my younger days) with a nice finish of hay.

The taste, oh man, it is so sweet! I feel like I am drinking tea that tastes like mown hay, f...

Tastes to me like a fresh, light green tea, though I do feel like the white tea undertones gives it a fuller flavor. Very smooth, no bitterness, a nice cup of pure tea. Slightly floral in aroma. I think I may have used too little leaf for the first cup because my only complaint is that I'd like a slightly stronger cup....

A top-notch white peony tea that I found a bit tricky to brew: aromatically complex, but easy to oversteep. If considering the aroma alone, this would be among my favorite white teas ever, but the experience of drinking it was slightly less than top-notch, I'd say only solidly good, not excellent.

The dry leaf is i...

The aroma of these adorable silver fuzzy leaves is like a field of wildflowers, there are notes of fresh vegetation, hay, flower nectar, and wildflowers. There are also notes of honey, sweet corn, and lettuce. Silver Needle is a complex yet delicate smelling pile of leaves, I have always enjoyed that about it.

Not a bad white tea. It tastes a bit like a hot version of unsweetened iced tea, or like a black tea without the bitterness. I haven't found a pure white tea that's a favorite yet and suspect I'll prefer flavored versions, but if this was all that was around I wouldn't be disappointed. I steeped the bag three times and...

A delightful, light tea that tastes to me more like a delicate green tea than a white tea. I've tried two other snow buds or Xue Ya teas, and I think this is a prime example of this style.

Dry leaf is coarse and hairy, silvery.

Brews fairly slowly, as I'd expect for an intact, whole-leafed tea. I steeped for th...

This tea is kind of weird. I don't know what to think of it. It smells kind of like a meaty soup, with a smoky aroma. I don't even know how to describe the flavor. It doesn't really taste like what I think of as white tea. It has sort of a muddled, soggy, and rich quality, like soup. I added cream and sugar.

Thank you Dewey for sharing this one with me, alongside two excellent loose-leaf teas which I have yet to review.

I thought this one was pretty bad.

Upon brewing, smells much more vegetal....

The aroma is quite mild evoking fresh vegetation and early springtime with a hint of floral. Brewed the leaves have the aroma of minerals, vegetation, and sage. The liquid also has notes of sage and smells incredibly clean.

The taste is mild (I have used that word a lot with this tea!) and a bit citrusy. There are ...
