Houjicha Gold (roasted Bancha) from Den's Tea

Style: Hojicha – Region: Shizuoka, Japan

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

The aroma of this tea is fairly mild, on the lightly toasted spectrum of Houjicha, blending a faint sweetness with autumn leaves and a touch of loam. Towards the finish there is a blend of nutty and toasted seaweed, giving it a savory, umami finish.

The taste starts a touch smoky and very umami, with strong toasted ...

So, does it smell toasty? Yes, yes it does, it is like a campfire with notes of marshmallow, toasted bread, toasted corn, loam, and a slight umami note from the toasted rice. Yes, it is rather fascinating, the black rice is not as sweet as the rice you get in the usual genmaicha, it has a savory note more similar to B...

Houjicha Amber Roast from Obubu Tea

Style: Hojicha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 1st, 2014

The aroma of this Houjicha is fun, it starts off as sweet roasted marshmallows and a touch of campfire, it then transitions to toasted sesame, burnt grass, and lastly a tiny wisp of distant sea air. I very much so had a vision pop into my mind of roasted marshmallows on a beach, the fire made from driftwood and sea gra...

Houjicha - Dark Roast from Obubu Tea

Style: Hojicha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 19th, 2014

The aroma is a blend of cedar, smoke, roasted tea, and autumn leaves. Brewing the leaves brings out rich earthy notes along with the smoke and cedar. The liquid sans leaves is sweet like fresh hay and roasted nuts.

The taste richly roasted and faintly smoked that fades to a sweet aftertaste. This tea tastes like au...

Japanese Ku-Ki Ho-Ji Cha (Roasted Ku-Ki Cha) from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan

77 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5

The aroma of this tea is very strong, almost too strong! I made the mistake of sticking my face into the package and got overwhelmed! Once I sniffed the tea at a farther distance the aroma is still mostly strongly roasted hojicha, no other nuanced notes float through. Once it is brewed however it takes on notes of swee...

This tea manages to embody everything wonderful about autumn, meaning it smells very smoky and richly roasted. Very clean and very earthy!

The flavor is intensely complex! Very rich and resinous with smoky notes and a sweet aftertaste. Delicious!

Roasted Tea Hoji-cha (16 ct.) from Yamamotoyama

Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5

The aroma of the tea vaguely reminds me of a lower grade Oolong and is very pleasant. It is not an overpowering aroma and has a tendency to fade pretty quickly.

The taste is great, Hoji-cha might be my favorite tea from Yamamotoyama Teas. The subtle smokiness with the rich taste of green is an excellent blend of fla...
