Commercial Description

In Chinese, gunpowder tea is called zhū chá (珠茶). The tea is so named because its rolled, pellet-like appearance is similar to gunpowder. It is also known as “green pearl” tea in other areas, which should not be confused with Jasmine Pearl tea or Dragon Pearl tea.

This is a very vegetal tea, but at the same time, not overwhelmingly so. In a way, it is your stereotypical green tea, that tastes like vegetables and has a slight bitterness to it. If you like green tea, however, it is an excellent everyday tea due to it's very affordable price.

First, the aroma is very smooth. It has a slight vegetal aroma but is more dominated by a smokiness and burnt smell. As I said, however, these are not dominating, and are all incorporated into a wonderfully pleasant smooth aroma.

The taste does not start off smooth. Instead, the tea has a very full body and is almost an explosion in your mouth. You are hit with the taste of raw vegetables and bitter greens such as spinach and kale. During this, there is also the aroma and taste of smokiness in the background. The initial explosion eventually mellows out into a smooth finish focused primarily on raw vegetables with a hint of smoky burntness.

Also, the tea is quite excellent when used to make Moroccan Mint tea, which is simply gunpowder green tea, spearmint (called nana mint in Morocco), and sugar steeped together. Another one of my favorite drinks.

Overall, a great full-bodied green tea that is quite affordable and excellent for everyday consumption.
