Barooti Assam (Broken Leaf with Golden Tips) from Ahmad Tea
Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India77 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 24th, 2013
I was really impressed by the strength of this tea, especially since I was craving a coffee and given this as a substitute (no coffee on hand today!). While it wasn't as meaty as coffee, I found the brew to have a strong dark flavor that was nearly just as good. As usual, I'm equally impressed by the reasonable price...

Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Wuyi, Fujian, China70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 24th, 2013
Broken leaf has a flakey appearance, and a pleasing aroma.
Brewed 4 minutes as recommended; I was worried this might be astringent because broken-leaf oolongs often are lower-quality, but this was pleasingly smooth. Aroma is smoky and richly fruity...reminiscent of some Wuyi Qi Lan. In spite of the very dark color...
Boston Harbour Tea Bags from Boston Harbour Tea
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 24th, 2013
This tea is kind of bland and boring, but I like it anyway. I added cream and sugar.

Mar. 24th, 2013
I'm not very familiar with yerba mate. It smells like a tree or something. But it tastes really good - it has a rich flavor, kind of chocolaty. I added cream and sugar.

This tea is good. It started out tasting weak, but as I got further down in the cup it started tasting pretty good. I added cream and sugar.

Style: Chun Mee – Region: China70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 22nd, 2013
This struck me as an average-quality chun mee (precious eyebrows) green tea for a very low price. Not the best tea of its type that I've sampled, but certainly the best at this price point.
I bought this tea in a Square tin for the pretty low price of $8 for 8 ounces, which seemed outright cheap to me.
The cup i...
Ancient Baked Heart Tea from Wild Tea Qi
Style: Green Tea – Region: Dali, Yunnan, China91 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 21st, 2013
I'm not hugely experienced with Yunnan green teas, but I tend to find them very interesting, and this one was no exception. This tea really amazed me with its ability to deliver infusion after infusion...the leaves seem to hold so much flavor!
Dry leaf is a mix of dark golden green and pale whitish leaves, and has ...
Nilgiri Select Black Tea from Wegmans
Style: Black Tea – Region: Nilgiri, India70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 21st, 2013
I thought this tea was pretty good, it wasn't terribly outstanding, but it satisfied my craving for a basic black, and the price seemed reasonable. With the combined price and quality, I feel like this tea could compete and overthrow my regular bagged blacks any day. I would buy it again if there were a Wegmans close...

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: India77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 21st, 2013
I thought that this tea had a really nice aroma to its dried leaf, which had strong spicy tones. The brew wasn't as fragrant, but I still enjoyed its taste. This tea wasn't anything spectacular, but it wasn't all bad. I thought it could have had a stronger flavor, which the dried leaf suggested. The price seemed reas...

Style: Da Hong Pao – Region: Wuyi, Fujian, China87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 20th, 2013
Dry leaf is aromatic, and consists of long, whole, slightly twisted leaves which unfurl quite slowly upon brewing.
There's a real explosion of aroma the minute the leaves touch water. The brewed cup is strongly aromatic, combining floral and honey-like tones that I normally only encounter in green Anxi oolongs like...
Barooti Assam (Broken Leaf with Golden Tips) from Ahmad Tea
Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 19th, 2013
Yet another high-quality loose-leaf tea from Ahmad, for a very reasonable price. I was surprised that Ahmad sells this alongside their Kalami Assam, which is a whole-leaf tea in a similar price range. This tea was very different, so I can understand how they'd carry both, but I didn't like it as much.
The cup has ...
Oriental Beauty Oolong Tea from Arbor Teas
Style: Oriental Beauty – Region: Anhui, China50 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 18th, 2013
I think Arbor Teas' description of this tea is spot-on: Velvety-smooth and sweet, almost suggestive of marmalade. I would not have guessed that this example is not from Taiwan--it tasted very similar to the Taiwanese Oriental Beauty oolongs.
Dry leaf has little aroma.
Brews a rich, dark colored cup, very smooth ...

Style: Mao Feng Green Tea – Region: Huangshan, Anhui, China67 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

I thought this tea was really good. The smell of the dried leaf was fresh and grassy, and the taste of the tea was equally fresh. At first, I didn't think it was terribly outstanding, until I had a second cup- I was impressed that the second brew was just as good as the first!

This tea is pretty good. I think most brands of vanilla rooibos taste similar. This one has a little stronger of a rooibos base than usual. I added cream and sugar.

An Earl Grey with a classic flavor profile, but on the weak side. I see on Frontier's new website that this tea uses the Irish Breakfast Tea as a base, probably a good choice because a strong base tea is needed to hold its own against the bergamot flavoring.
Dry leaf is finely broken, and has a classic Earl Grey fl...
Darjeeling from Twinings
Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 16th, 2013
This tea is pretty good, actually. I'm surprised because I don't usually like darjeeling or Twinings that much. I often find Twinings teas to be too bitter, and darjeeling teas to be too sickly sweet/vegetal tasting, but in this tea, the qualities seem to balance each other out, and it tastes like a normal, pretty good...

Mar. 15th, 2013
Although chamomile is the dominant and defining herb in this blend, I like it much more than straight chamomile tea.
Brews a rich golden color. Aroma is highly floral, but not in a fleeting or cloying way. Reminiscent more of flowers in a meadow on a dry summer day, and quite different from the intoxicating fragra...
Okumidori Sencha from Wegmans
Style: Sencha – Region: Japan77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 15th, 2013
A good sencha that infuses very quickly. In my opinion, much better than Wegman's Tomo Sencha, although pricier.
The dry leaf has a very dark green color and fine texture, and is intensely aromatic: highly vegetal and suggestive of sweetness and umami.
Brews a surprisingly clear and pale cup, especially relative...
Organic White Peony (Bai MuDan) Tea from TeaVivre
Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fuding, Fujian, China60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 14th, 2013
This tea is very light and a bit floral. It tastes a bit like a watered down green tea. It is definitely not bitter, and not very sour or really even sweet. It is not at all astringent.
It when brewed for about 2 minutes, it produced a pale amber color. I brewed it a second time, for much longer, and it was a littl...
Boston Harbour Tea Bags from Boston Harbour Tea
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend43 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 14th, 2013
This was an interesting tea to try, mainly for the historical connection to the Boston Tea Party. I wish I were able to try the loose-leaf tea, because the tea bag wasn't terribly impressive.
Brewed as recommended, 3 minutes with boiling water, the tea bag produced a cup with little aroma, much less than Lipton and...
Roasted Tea Hoji-cha (16 ct.) from Yamamotoyama
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan90 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 14th, 2013
This was my first time trying roasted green tea. It is definitely a unique aroma and flavor. It is smokey and rich, crisp and savory. It reminded me a bit of coffee.
This is the kind of tea I would like to come home to on a cold winter day. I will be back for more!
Darjeeling (teabag) from Ahmad Tea
Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India57 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 14th, 2013
I'm not usually a big fan of darjeeling teas. It tastes kind of bitter and vegetal, and I don't like those qualities. It's not as strong and rich as the kinds of black teas that I like more. It tastes kind of dry. I added cream and sugar.

This is pretty good peppermint tea. It's tasty, and it's fairly cheap. If you like peppermint tea, it's a good buy, but it's not anything I consider particularly exciting.

The smell of this tea was amazing! I loved the complex mixture of spices in the dried leaf, so much so that I let a nearby friend smell it as well - she agreed! I was a little bit disappointed that the tea wasn't flavored as strong as the dried leaf suggested, but overall I was happy with my cup and would drink it ag...
