97 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 7th, 2014

The aroma is crisp and clean with notes of cedar and pine with tones of pepper and sage. Once brewed the tea becomes more herbaceous with strong hints of sage and basil, there are notes of pine resin and sweetness of freshly tapped tree sap.

The tea's flavor reminds me of the way that a winter forest smells. It is ...

White Night from Mandala Tea

Style: White Tea – Region: Simao, Yunnan, China

83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 29th, 2013

This was among the most interesting of the white teas I've tried, although more familiar and similar to typical white teas than moonlight white. E. Alex Gerster called this tea "sturdy" and I like that; I also want to thank him for providing me with this sample.

Dry leaf has a peculiar aroma, like caramel and overr...

Yunnan Jig from Adagio Teas

77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Dec. 14th, 2013

The aroma of this tea is fairly delicate with notes of muscatel, oak, and summer berries. When brewed it takes a turn for the malty and stronger oak notes.

The taste is bright and clean with notes of muscatel, sweetness, and dark chocolate. It is a great afternoon tea.

Dec. 6th, 2013

The aroma of this tea is so reminiscent of Chocolate Oranges that I think I got instantly transferred to a Christmas candy store. There is a bit of the Pu Erh Earthiness but mostly it is chocolate and oranges. Same for when the tea is steeped.

The taste is very smooth, sweet and well balanced. The chocolate and ora...

Style: Pu-erh Tea – Region: Yunnan, China

57 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Dec. 5th, 2013

This is my first try of Pu-Erh. It's very strong. The aroma is similar to damp soil. The liquor is very dark. I think this tea is strong enough for milk or cream and sugar. I will be careful in my next selection of a Pu-Erh. If you enjoy a really bold cup of tea, this might be what you are looking for.

Dec. 5th, 2013

The aroma is a mixture of roses, leather, earthiness, and yeastiness. Brewing the tea brought on the aroma of earthiness and heady roses, it is quite intense.

I was able to get five steepings out of this tea and probably could have gotten more! The first steep tasted like leather and earthy, it was a bit biter but ...

The first thing I noticed about this tea's aroma is the strawberry, which immediately reminded me of Crunch Berries! I also pick up notes of cream, hazelnut, earthiness, and minerals. It is a complex tea.

The taste is also complex, first there is a blend of earthy, metallic, and mineral flavors that really pop in m...

Yunnan Imperial Black from Single Origin Teas

Style: Black Tea – Region: Yunnan, China

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 18th, 2013

The aroma of this tea is wonderfully sublime, woodsy, muscatel, and oaky like a wine cask. The brewed tea brings more earthiness and wood notes, the liquid is very sweet and makes my nose tingle.

The taste is wonderful! One of the smoothest black teas I have ever had. Sweet, earthy, and oaky. A wonderful tea.

I thought this tea was great. I really liked the roasty smell, and thought it was a great tea for a cool fall morning.

I didn't notice a peppery smell or taste at all, so I feel like the description is deceiving.

I absolutely adore this tea. Wonderful amber color. Smooth Yunnan flavor with a sweet caramel taste being most prominent and a light spicy, peppery tone as a highlight. Does well with a short one minute steep for the first infusion, 2 minutes for the second, and 5 for the third.

It is a bit pricey, but worth every ...

This is one of those teas that I first purchased a few years ago, and became one of my few go-to teas when I needed a bit of warmth and comfort. I know it is either in short supply or sold. At right now, but I was overjoyed to be able to add an ounce to my last order!

Complex, warm and soothing. This is great tea fo...

Made of a very good quality "Ripened" Shou Cha, the convenience of having this in a teabag is nice for travelers and is perhaps the first Puerh in a bag that I have liked. It is definitely bold, earthy, with the distinctive fermented aroma of forest leaves--not for the faint hearted!

If you are not familiar with Pue...

White Night from Mandala Tea

Sep. 13th, 2013

Recently was able to restock my supply of this wonderful tea, after enjoying it on and off for the past two years. It is quite unique for a white tea, with light flavors and subtle complexities that change as the tea ages. Added a link to the Steepster page where I have added a few notes on this one. A "sturdy" white t...

Sep. 5th, 2013

Top notch! A rich, complex black tea with a classic Yunnan character, yet a unique signature of its own. Great for multiple infusions, and exhibits different characteristics in each cup.

Mandala recommended 2-4 pearls; it looks like 3 pearls is about a typical serving that I'd use for a cup of tea, so that was spo...

Sep. 3rd, 2013

A strange tea, with a lot going on.

Aroma of the dry cake is unimpressive, even slightly unpleasant, but when I brew it, it becomes much better tasting. It looks attractive at least, with a lot of golden tips.

Besides the dusty tones reminiscent of a damp basement (which are most evident before actually sipping ...

China Breakfast from Rishi Tea

Style: Yunnan Red – Region: Yunnan, China

77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 9th, 2013

This is a very wonderful tea, reasonably priced (about $4 per ounce on their website at the date of this review) and having appeal to both tea newbies and veterans alike. I like it better brewed for slightly shorter times than those recommended by Rishi, which seems to eliminate any bitterness and enhance the complexit...

This tea was a real revelation to me. It is an amazing example of how careful growing and processing can bring out the very best in the tea leaf. Multiple brewings--either western style or Chinese style--bring out subtle flavors ranging from almost floral, vegetal sweetness in early steepings, to more substantial nutty...

Wild Snow Sprout Tea from Wild Tea Qi

Style: Green Tea – Region: Yunnan, China

87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jul. 11th, 2013

When I first opened the package I thought, is this a fermented tea? It had the rich earthy aroma of a Pu Erh and the smokiness of a mild Lapsang Souchong with just a hint of that 'Asian Market' smell that you get with Pu Erhs. It is delightful and unfamiliar, certainly a new aroma from a green tea.

Once the leaves ...

A tea that really grew on me. At first I didn't know what to make of it, but after drinking a few cups I found myself loving it.

Dry leaf, mildly aromatic but subdued, becomes intensely aromatic when wet. But I find the resulting cup is again more subdued. Although the leaf is green, the brewed cup is dark in col...

Yunnan Breakfast from Rishi Tea

Style: Yunnan Red – Region: Yunnan, China

73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 7th, 2013

I was expecting this tea, on the basis of its name, to be basically the same tea as Rishi's China Breakfast, as that tea also comes from Yunnan province. I don't know if it is a different tea, if it was simply a different batch that I tried, or if something about steeping it in a tea bag changed the character, but it ...
