Citron from Tazo Tea

Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: Blend

43 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Aug. 16th, 2011

This blend, which has since been discontinued, is an odd one. I can see why it was discontinued, but I'm glad that I was able to try it when it was available.

Tazo adds citric acid, "natural flavors", and orange peel to black tea to create this blend. Unlike Tazo passion, another blend with added citric acid, whic...

ML Verbena Mint Organic from Mighty Leaf Tea

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Aug. 10th, 2011

This was a surprisingly good herbal blend. I tend to prefer blends of spearmint and lemon verbena, and I was a little worried because this one uses peppermint: peppermint can easily overpower other aromas. Fortunately, this one is balanced just right and the mint does not overpower the verbena at all.

Pleasingly l...

Vanilla Rooibos Parfait Full Leaf from Tazo Tea

Style: Flavored Rooibos – Region: Blend

15 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Aug. 3rd, 2011

Ugh. This one was sweetened, and I didn't expect it. Annoyingly, I can't find any info online about it being sweetened or what it is sweetened with. To me, this tastes extremely sweet, but I'm used to only drinking unsweetened tea. And from reading the commercial description, there's no way to know that it's sweete...

Cacaoberry Green Tea from Zhena's Gypsy Tea

Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Blend

47 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 25th, 2011

A balanced but somewhat muddled tea. Brews a brownish-orange cup with a greenish tinge. Flavor is mild and smooth. Aroma is weak at first, but upon drinking, there's a strong fruitiness that emerges. I don't notice much of the base green tea, but the rooibos is definitely present.

Interesting to try, but unimpre...

Organic Lavender Tea from Divinitea

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 19th, 2011

A fairly robust, standard black tea with a strong, but not overpowering lavender presence. Lavender can tend to have a resinous quality, leaving a sticky astringency on the palate; this tea has none of this potential flaw, which I am grateful for. It is quite balanced too, the base tea's aroma and flavor definitely c...

Earl Grey Filterbags from Tazo Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 4/5
Jul. 13th, 2011

An exceptionally strong Earl Grey, much stronger than any of Tazo's other teas. I recommend steeping a little less than one normally would: 1-2 minutes still yields a strong cup, and then you can get a second infusion.

Aroma is very rich: somewhat malty, moderate bergamot presence, and some lemony tones. Full-bodi...

Mayan Chai from Divinitea

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 12th, 2011

Aroma mostly of vanilla and spice, with nutmeg and cinnamon dominant. Full-bodied, and with some strong black tea character, but with the spice dominating. Slightly tannic finish. I like the flavor more than the aroma.

I'm not crazy about this one, the creamy, vanilla qualities I find a bit strange. I also like ...

Echinacea Immune Support from Yogi Tea

Style: Wellness Tea / Medicinal Tea – Region: Blend

57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
May. 24th, 2011

I drank this tea mainly to see how it tasted, not for its medicinal effects. There are so many different ingredients, many of them strongly aromatic. In this blend, however, they come across more as complex, and less muddled, which I think shows some artfulness on behalf of the blenders at Yogi.

Many tones emerge...

Earl Grey from Allegro

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

47 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
May. 24th, 2011

This is not a typical Earl Grey; it also contains lemon flavoring as well as the usual bergamot, but the difference is subtle. The overall character of this tea is relatively strong, but not particularly complex. There is a fairly strong bergamot presence, with some noticeable lemon too, but the base black tea does n...

Bed & Breakfast (formerly Breakfast Bliss) from Zhena's Gypsy Tea

Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend

43 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
May. 17th, 2011

An average strength black tea, this did not scream "breakfast" to me. More sour than bitter. Nondescript aroma. Not bad, but not great either.

This did not stand out to me relative to any of the mainstream black teas on the market, yet it is significantly pricier.

Apr. 10th, 2011

I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about this one. It definitely has that "Christmas" vibe to it, and was less like a typical spiced tea. Aroma of cinnamon, clove, and with a suggestion of vanilla (although that is not in the ingredients). The nuances of the base tea don't really come through, but there is definitel...

Smooth initial flavor. I feel a bit conflicted giving this one such low ratings because it does have many good qualities, but I just disliked it overall.

There's a lot of chamomile in this blend, and chamomile is definitely evident in the aroma. I also notice, however, the rather unpleasant aroma of valerian. Val...

Super Green Tea - Matcha, Sencha & Orange from Good Earth Teas

Style: Wellness Tea / Medicinal Tea – Region: Blend

17 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Mar. 27th, 2011

I received this tea bag from a trade when visiting some friends.

I was not impressed with this one. The aroma is flat and I find that the orange and sencha simply do not go well together (this is the second orange-flavored sencha I've tried and I really don't like it.) Flavor is unpleasantly sour.

I also think ...

Style: Flavored Rooibos – Region: Blend

37 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 21st, 2011

This brews a deep red cup. The aromas blend well, but the cinnamon has an artificial quality to it. I can notice the base rooibos, but the flavorings slightly overpower it. The whole blend is full-bodied, and naturally rather sweet.

I would like this blend, if it were not for the artificial cinnamon aroma. With ...

I had the opportunity to sample this a couple times. The second time I had a fresher sample and it tasted noticeably better. The tea bag smelled malty, which was a good sign!

Brews a rich, dark color. Flavor is weaker than I expect from this style: not very bitter, and aroma is less malty than I like. Compared t...

I picked a single teabag of this up...not enough to judge its antidepressant effects (supposedly it takes weeks to notice anything), but I was curious what it tasted like.

Brewing as instructed (10+ minutes) it produces a complex aroma of herbs, earth, licorice, and fennel. There are a lot of different ingredients ...

Mar. 14th, 2011

I was drinking this as a beverage, not a medicinal tea, so I made a single 3-minute infusion instead of the recommended 10-15 minute one. I imagine it might get a bit too strong if brewed that much: 3 minutes was plenty strong and even perhaps a bit too much.

The cup is greenish brown, like some mild black teas. A...

Mar. 13th, 2011

I made a 4-minute infusion.

Aroma is muddled, creamy vanilla, and some lemon from the lemongrass and lemon oil, but the lemon is an herbaceous lemon which doesn't blend well with the vanilla. The chamomile seems to add only body, and the rose is barely perceptible but I bet I'd notice it if it were taken out--I thi...

Thank you to my friend Morgan for giving this one to me to sample! I had the 1.5g sample--a little less tea than I normally use for a single cup, but similar to the amount in most other mainstream tea company's tea bags.

Overall, smooth and somewhat flat flavor: not very bitter, a hint of a savory quality, and a sl...

Peppery, producing a light burn even drinking a third of the cup.

Although the aroma suggests cocoa, spice, and warmth, the flavor is surprisingly cool, clean, and fresh. Licorice is definitely noticable as the dominant tone in the aroma; the cocoa is more subdied. Fairly balanced aroma, hard to tell where one spi...

Raspberry Earl from Zhena's Gypsy Tea

50 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 1st, 2011

I had the opportunity to sample this tea at a friend's house.

I find the idea of a raspberry-flavored Earl Grey to be a bit strange: raspberry is not a flavor that I would think of going well with Earl Grey tea.

This blend works, however. I don't like it as much as a regular Earl Grey, but it's really not bad.

Impressive for a simple paper-wrapped tea bag.

Typical black tea aroma, not terribly complex. Mostly deep and malty, like an Assam, but with some of the tones characteristic of Ceylon. Slightly smoky. Significantly lighter than a pure Assam.

Surprisingly, this tea has a substantial savory or umami flavor. It ...

Feb. 18th, 2011

This herbal tea is the first blend I've ever tried that tastes very similar (i.e. in the same style) as Celestial Seasoning's Sleepytime; it's so similar that I'm almost inclined to think of it as a knockoff or imitation.

The aroma is primarily spearmint, with a noticeable chamomile presence. Compared to Celestial ...

Aroma overwhelmingly pepperminty, but in drinking the cup, the licorice emerges. The peppermint and licorice complement each other, with the mint piercing, fresh, but fleeting, and the licorice slow to emerge, but warming and lasting.

Very sweet flavor, even without adding any sweetener.

I'm not crazy about pepp...

Feb. 17th, 2011

Another impressive herbal blend from Sacred Rose. This herbal tea bears a strange resemblance to sencha, both in the appearance of the brewed cup and its flavor profile.

Aroma is very balanced: a hint of peppermint, which lends a creamy smoothness, and a strong dried ginger presence (less like fresh ginger). The r...
