Grand Earl Grey from Octavia Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 12th, 2013

Served in Velvet Sky Bakery in Jenkintown.

This was a very strong, robust Earl Grey that had an intense, classic Earl Grey aroma, combining a powerful, malty base tea with a bold bergamot presence.

Octavia Tea informs me that the base tea used is a Yunnan tea...it definitely seems to have the strength and charact...

Lavender Sencha Green Tea from Wegmans

Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Japan

57 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 12th, 2013

This one was a bit odd.

The combination of lavender and sencha, oddly produces a smell similar to fruit loops. It's also a smell I associate a bit with soap or shampoo.

I brewed briefly as recommended (1 minute), and the tea was a bit weak for my tastes. I tried steeping 3 minutes, because this brings out more ...

Organic Jasmine Green Tea from Wegmans

Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: China

47 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Jun. 11th, 2013

Dry leaf has a very fruity aroma that I'm not terribly fond of, almost suggestive of bubble-gum. I find it cloying.

Upon brewing, the aroma is similar, slightly less offensive...less floral and more fruity than normal for jasmine, and balanced by some sort of edgy herbaceous undertones of the base tea. Very smooth...

Taiwan Ginseng (Lan Gui Ren) Oolong Tea from TeaVivre

Style: Ginseng Oolong – Region: Taiwan / Formosa

60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 7th, 2013

It's been a long time since I tried a ginseng oolong, so I'm not the most experienced reviewer of this type of blend.

Dry leaf shows a dusty appearance, and has a strong but muted aroma, suggestive of greener oolongs, but perhaps more woody and earthy.

Upon brewing, the aroma is predominately of oolong and the ...

Orange Jasmine Black Tea from Mighty Leaf Tea

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend

60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 2/5
May. 26th, 2013

This was a balanced tea that I found tasted much better once it had cooled to room temperature. I drank it hot, but I think it may actually make a much better iced tea than hot tea. If it weren't for the steep price tag, I'd recommend this one.

Flavor is very clean and crisp: there's a pleasant bitterness, and the...

Organic Jasmine Silver Needle Tea from Wegmans

Style: Jasmine Silver Needle – Region: China

73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
May. 25th, 2013

This one was surprisingly different from the pure, unscented silver needles from Wegmans. I liked it much more. Compared to other jasmine silver needles I tried in the past but did not review, this one was much more aromatic.

The dry leaf smells very strongly like wintergreen, almost suggestive of bubblegum. I fo...

Earl Grey from Hampstead Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
May. 13th, 2013

I wasn't terribly impressed with this one.

The base tea tasted a little bland and generic to me. Hampstead does not share where the base tea is from, but it tastes more like Ceylon tea than anything else. The bergamot presence is light. Some slightly odd tones in the aroma, including black pepper and something su...

Chai Tea from Frontier

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: ?????

67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
May. 12th, 2013

A very peppery, spicy chai that with a surprisingly mild base tea.

The leaf is very finely broken, which made me afraid that this one would be too strong, but I find the black tea used as the base is very mild. I don't know where it's from, but it reminds me of some of the milder high-grown Ceylon teas.

Jasmine Black Tea from Ahmad Tea

Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: ?????

83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Apr. 12th, 2013

I regularly drink jasmine green tea, and this jasmine-scented black tea was a completely new experience for me. It was very different, and a bit odd at first, but as I've drunk more of it (I'm glad I got a half pound) I've come to like it very much.

Dry leaf has a potent but smooth jasmine aroma. I don't notice mu...

Earl Grey from Ahmad Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 7th, 2013

I thought this was a classic British-style Earl Grey in tea bags. I liked it considerably better than Twinings.

Moderate body, just the right amount of bergamot. I found the base tea to be less aromatic and complex than I like, however. I strongly preferred Ahmad's English Afternoon blend, which has a lighter ber...

English Afternoon from Ahmad Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 26th, 2013

Surprisingly Strong. A robust black tea with a strong, malty base but lighter overtones as well. The flavoring is Earl-grey-like, a light bergamot scent, slightly lemony and perfumey as well. Aroma rather floral, suggestive of rose and Queen Anne's lace.

Bold flavor. Quite bitter and tannic, with an astringent f...

Earl Grey Tea from Frontier

Mar. 17th, 2013

An Earl Grey with a classic flavor profile, but on the weak side. I see on Frontier's new website that this tea uses the Irish Breakfast Tea as a base, probably a good choice because a strong base tea is needed to hold its own against the bergamot flavoring.

Dry leaf is finely broken, and has a classic Earl Grey fl...

Genmaimatcha Green Tea from Wegmans

Style: Genmaicha – Region: Japan

60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 13th, 2013

A pleasant, perfectly drinkable tea that is dirt cheap. Although I didn't think it was great, it had few objectionable qualities and I actually think it is a pretty good buy. It seems to have much more toasted rice than tea leaf, and has a bitterness and sourness that I normally don't encounter in either genmaicha or...

Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls Green Tea from Teavana

Style: Jasmine Pearls – Region: ?????

67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 9th, 2013

This struck me as a solid-quality Jasmine tea, but nothing extraordinary.

Unlike many of Teavana's offerings, it's on the strong side.

Flavor is smooth, but there is a bitter undertone. To me, this tea felt fairly strongly caffeinated. Aroma is perfumey, more than I like it to be. The base tea is very mild and...

Green Tea Tulsi Tea from Organic India

Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: ?????

40 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 8th, 2013

For some reason, I did not expect to like this one, I think in large part because I've had pretty bad experiences with finely-broken green tea in tea bags, and I also don't see Tulsi's characteristic flavor and aroma blending as well with green teas as I think it does with black tea.

Although I still wasn't crazy ab...

Organic Earl Grey from Wegmans

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

Mar. 8th, 2013

This Earl Grey has a classic British character.

The dry leaf is very aromatic, with a strong, fresh smell.

Upon brewing, steeping for 6 minutes, this produces a rich cup with moderate strength of flavor and a moderate body. The Bergamot is bold but not overpowering, and the base tea has somewhat of a warming qua...

Organic Masala Chai Black Tea from Wegmans

Mar. 1st, 2013

A good masala chai blend, but not among the best I've tried.

This tea looks to contain a nice blend of dry spices. I see a lot of cardamom pods, which is a good sign.

I thought the base tea was a little on the weak side. In spite of being broken into small pieces, it didn't seem to impart much strength to the c...

Jasmine Tea Bags from Rishi Tea

Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: Hubei, China

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 17th, 2013

This struck me as one of the better jasmine teas I've had in a tea bag or sachet, if not the best. I'd compare it against Two Leaves and a Bud's Jasmine Petal, or Novus Tea's Jasmine Tea. I prefer it to both; it seemed more similar to Novus Tea's offering.

Slightly perfumey. Very full-bodied; somewhat astringent ...

Feb. 12th, 2013

I find it interesting that this tea is sometimes presented as green and other times presented as oolong. The base is pouchong or bao zhong, and it is flavored with bergamot as Earl Grey tea is...it is NOT the same as Yongchun Fo Shou, the other tea called Bergamot Oolong, a tea I like very much.

Coconut Black Tea from Arbor Teas

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 2nd, 2013

Dry leaf has an intoxicating rum-like or almost whiskey-like (bourbon) aroma that I find very pleasant. More similar to the Vanilla tea sold by Arbor Teas than to any other Coconut-flavored tea I've encountered before. Lighter overall than that tea, and less cocoa-ey.

Very pleasing to drink. Brews a robust, rich ...

The dry leaf smells a bit like potpourri, and a bit like a regular Masala chai.

Upon brewing, this tea is quite peppery and almost prickly on the palate. The brewed cup is not as floral-smelling as the leaf. Aroma is complex and hard to describe: I definitely notice the clove, but the other aromas seem to blend to...

Wow. I wasn't expecting to like this tea as much as I did. Unlike any vanilla-flavored tea I have ever had.

Aroma of the dry leaf and spices is pleasantly pungent, typical for a high-quality Masala chai blend.

I prepared this blend with and without milk. I thought it was better with milk.

A strong Earl Grey. Brewed as instructed, I unfortunately did not have much to experiment with, but the first time was satisfying to me so I'm writing a good review!

Dry leaf is strongly aromatic, and has a unique aroma. Brews a rich, dark color. The base tea has a strong presence, with a rich, warming quality.

Yummy Chai from nourishtea

This was a somewhat unusual and different-tasting chai. I don't think I like it quite as much as my favorite blends, or as the chai that I mix up myself, but it was still pretty good.

The aroma is strongly suggestive of nutmeg, which is odd because the ingredient list doesn't contain nutmeg. The base tea seems a l...
