Blackcurrant Black Tea from Impra Tea

Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: Sri Lanka / Ceylon

Feb. 18th, 2014

I'm a huge fan of Twinings blackcurrant-flavored black tea, and it's the only example of such a tea that I've ever tried, so I was curious to try this one. Unfortunately, I don't like it as much.

The fruit flavoring is much stronger in this tea...it's so strong that walking out of the room, and coming back, I can s...

Lemon & Lime Twist from Ahmad Tea

Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 15th, 2014

An interesting change of pace; not my favorite.

Much more lime than lemon in the aroma; this is no standard lemon black tea. The base tea is bold, strong, and malty. The overall effect is a very edgy cup, completely unlike how adding lemon usually takes the edge off a strong black tea.

Nice, and interesting, bu...

Peach & Passion Fruit from Ahmad Tea

Feb. 13th, 2014

It's a select group of fruit-flavored teas that I like, and it's even less frequent that there's an inexpensive one in a tea bag that is among my favorites--but this is one of these teas.

Aroma is fruity but pungent and deep; the fruitiness is not transient or fleeting, but rather is persistent, and accompanied by d...

Pomegranate Black Tea from Bigelow Tea

Feb. 12th, 2014

Thank you to my friend Liz for sharing this one with me. Take my review in the context that I tend not to like fruit-flavored tea bags, so although my rating number is not great, this is actually a pretty positive review: I'm comparing it against all my favorite loose-leaf artisan teas.

Tea bag smells intensely fru...

Earl Grey Classic Tea from Fortnum & Mason

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 15th, 2014

A solid British-style Earl Grey, smooth and easy to drink. I'm excited that I finally got to try a loose-leaf tea from Fortnum and Mason. I have been unimpressed by their tea bags, but their loose-leaf is definitely a step up in quality.

Broken-leaf with a classic Earl Grey aroma, both of the dry loose-leaf tea, a...

Kenyan Black Tea with Lemon (Teabags) from Ajiri Tea

Style: Lemon Black Tea – Region: Blend

93 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jan. 9th, 2014

I thought this to be a very original blend, top-notch.

Very intense lemon fragrance, holding its own against the base tea. Like most lemon myrtle, there's a deep woody or resinous undertone, making a very complex aroma, combined with the malty but fresh aroma of the Kenyan black tea. The lemon myrtle really holds ...

I'm not a huge fan of orange spice teas, but this is my favorite example of one yet.

This was a classic orange spice tea blend, a lot like Market Spice's Cinnamon Orange, or a more refined variant of Bigelow's Constant Comment. If you like either of those teas, I'd recommend this one.

I wish I had had the opport...

Lemon Twist from Twinings

Style: Lemon Black Tea – Region: ?????

40 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
Jan. 2nd, 2014

Thanks to E. Alex Gerster for this sample. It was not my cup of tea but was interesting to try!

This tea smells lemony, but not intensely so. The lemon is a bit artificial smelling, more suggestive of lemon lifesavers or other lemon candy than natural lemon-scented herbs or actual lemon fruit. There is a hint of ...

Earl Grey Black Tea from Stash Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: ?????

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 1st, 2014

A mild Earl Grey that was sweet in flavor, perfumey in aroma, but overly astringent.

Tea bag smells more lemony / citrusy than most Earl grey, with a hint of spice.

Brews up a surprisingly aromatic cup for a tea bag, with a perfumey smell that suggests sweetness. Rich and full-bodied, somewhat astringent, but no...

Almond Chai from Twinings

37 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 1/5
Nov. 18th, 2013

I strongly disliked this one, which is perhaps to be expected, as I dislike Twinings regular chai, although I thought this one was much worse. The nut aroma seemed artificial, the base tea was weak and uninteresting, and I didn't like the choice or blend of spices.

The aroma seems very artificial, and somewhat unpl...

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 3rd, 2013

I thought this was a very balanced, complex rendition of an orange spice tea. The orange flavor is subdued, always noticeable but never overwhelming; there are a lot of spices and overall, the character of this blend is more like a masala chai or spiced tea than a typical "orange spice" tea.

None of the spices are ...

Chocolate Peppermint from Tea Horse

A subdued blend that I found very pleasing.

The cup has a light aroma which strongly reminds me of the inside of the old Wilbur chocolate factory in Lititz PA, with the smell of chocolate and peppermint. The peppermint has a slightly creamy quality to it.

Upon sipping, the flavor is pleasant...there's a slight m...

Served in Velvet Sky, Jenkintown.

This blend smells very chocolatey, but upon sipping it the dominant aroma is cinnamon. I wasn't crazy about the Spiced Chai Mate from Octavia for the same reason: too much cinnamon, and I feel the same way about this blend: it would otherwise be very good, but has too much cinnamon...

Jul. 3rd, 2013

Served at Velvet Sky Bakery in Jenkintown.

This is called French Breakfast but it conjures up more of a Russian image to me, especially the combination of rose with other flavorings, against the background of a strong black tea.

I was expecting this to be stronger than some of Octavia's other teas, which tend to ...

I sampled this tea courtesy of the Church of the Holy City in Wilmington, Delaware.

It was interesting, and very different from anything else of the sort. Just a basic paper tea bag, but it was fresh, full-bodied, flavorful, and aromatic.

The clove is enough to impart a richness, but not enough to give that shar...

Served in Velvet Sky Bakery in Jenkintown.

This was a very strong, robust Earl Grey that had an intense, classic Earl Grey aroma, combining a powerful, malty base tea with a bold bergamot presence.

This was a balanced tea that I found tasted much better once it had cooled to room temperature. I drank it hot, but I think it may actually make a much better iced tea than hot tea. If it weren't for the steep price tag, I'd recommend this one.

Flavor is very clean and crisp: there's a pleasant bitterness, and the...

Earl Grey from Hampstead Tea

May. 13th, 2013

I wasn't terribly impressed with this one.

The base tea tasted a little bland and generic to me. Hampstead does not share where the base tea is from, but it tastes more like Ceylon tea than anything else. The bergamot presence is light. Some slightly odd tones in the aroma, including black pepper and something su...

Earl Grey from Ahmad Tea

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 7th, 2013

I thought this was a classic British-style Earl Grey in tea bags. I liked it considerably better than Twinings.

Moderate body, just the right amount of bergamot. I found the base tea to be less aromatic and complex than I like, however. I strongly preferred Ahmad's English Afternoon blend, which has a lighter ber...

Surprisingly Strong. A robust black tea with a strong, malty base but lighter overtones as well. The flavoring is Earl-grey-like, a light bergamot scent, slightly lemony and perfumey as well. Aroma rather floral, suggestive of rose and Queen Anne's lace.

Bold flavor. Quite bitter and tannic, with an astringent f...

An Earl Grey with a classic flavor profile, but on the weak side. I see on Frontier's new website that this tea uses the Irish Breakfast Tea as a base, probably a good choice because a strong base tea is needed to hold its own against the bergamot flavoring.

Dry leaf is finely broken, and has a classic Earl Grey fl...

This Earl Grey has a classic British character.

The dry leaf is very aromatic, with a strong, fresh smell.

Upon brewing, steeping for 6 minutes, this produces a rich cup with moderate strength of flavor and a moderate body. The Bergamot is bold but not overpowering, and the base tea has somewhat of a warming qua...

Coconut Black Tea from Arbor Teas

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend

Dry leaf has an intoxicating rum-like or almost whiskey-like (bourbon) aroma that I find very pleasant. More similar to the Vanilla tea sold by Arbor Teas than to any other Coconut-flavored tea I've encountered before. Lighter overall than that tea, and less cocoa-ey.

Very pleasing to drink. Brews a robust, rich ...

Wow. I wasn't expecting to like this tea as much as I did. Unlike any vanilla-flavored tea I have ever had.

Dry leaf has an intoxicating aroma, suggestive of high-quality vanilla extract, and rum.

The aroma of the cup is just as potent upon brewing, and is quite rum-like. There are tones of spice that come out...

A strong Earl Grey. Brewed as instructed, I unfortunately did not have much to experiment with, but the first time was satisfying to me so I'm writing a good review!

Dry leaf is strongly aromatic, and has a unique aroma. Brews a rich, dark color. The base tea has a strong presence, with a rich, warming quality.
