Yun Nan Dian Hong Black Tea – Golden Tip from TeaVivre

Style: Yunnan Gold – Region: Yunnan, China

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Sep. 7th, 2012

I liked this tea a lot. It had a subtle flavor and was really smooth. I thought the tea smelled a little like cooked greens, which I like, so I had no problem with that. I probably wouldn't pay the price, but I can see why others would, it's a high quality tea.

This tea is interesting. It has a strong aroma of molasses, which is a little weird. The flavor is pretty good. It's strong and deep. I added cream and sugar. It's kind of hard to brew with my small infuser because the balls expand so much.

I don't think this is my kind of tea. It's a little weird, but all right. I'm not sure how to describe it. It doesn't have a very strong flavor, and I tend to like strong tea with bold flavors. I added cream and sugar. It's not worth the price to me. It also generates a lot of foam in the leaves while brewing, and ther...

Aug. 16th, 2012

In spite of having tried quite a few Yunnan teas by now, this was something completely different for me! Very interesting, although a little bit difficult to brew to satisfaction. The dry leaf, rolled into dense spheres, has only a mild aroma, more suggestive of Keemun than other Yunnan teas.

I first used a small ...

Yun Nan Dian Hong Black Tea – Golden Tip from TeaVivre

Style: Yunnan Gold – Region: Yunnan, China

77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jul. 29th, 2012

Dry leaf, consisting almost exclusively of unbroken golden tips, is extremely aromatic and fresh, with the characteristic quality that all black teas from Yunnan province seem to have, but fruitier than normal.

Upon brewing, the leaf turns darker in color and produces a rich brown cup.

Like other Yunnan Dian Hong...

Complex and smooth, a bit on the weaker side though. Dry leaf has a strong aroma, characteristic of Yunnan red teas.

Aroma is complex. Moderately smoky, resembling tobacco smoke and smoky green teas (like gunpowder) more than most smoky black teas, also moderately fruity, almost like a Keemun. Flavor unusually sm...

67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 28th, 2011

A classic Yunnan black tea, unusually smooth for a tea bag. Aroma is complex, with hints of cocoa, wood, and fruit. Peppery finish, characteristic of Yunnan teas.

I recommend a longer steeping time (5+ min). This tea is not as aromatic as a loose-leaf Yunnan, and its flavor is mild so you can steep it for a long ...

Oct. 15th, 2011

Jingmai Mountain produces some amazing teas, and this one from Samovar is no exception. They are right on the money when they describe the taste and aroma as: "Deep and malty with hints of baked, bittersweet chocolate and raisin sugar. Lightly roasted body with a slightly sweet finish."

Optimal brewing is with sprin...

This tea is mostly golden buds, and it is very similar to the other tea I've sampled that looks most similar to it in appearance, which was Life in Teacup's Yunnan Golden Bud. Smooth and peppery. Compared to that tea, this one has a softer peppery quality. Both teas are slightly Keemun-like.

Requires a long brewi...

This has become one of the staples in my cupboard over the past year. It is one of those highly adaptable teas that seems to appeal equally to friends who are tea purists, and those who just want a "good cuppa' tea" as well.

Bold, smooth, slight malty flavor with a lingering caramel aftertaste. A very nice balance...

Jul. 11th, 2011

This is a classic, high-quality Yunnan red. Dry leaf contains some golden tips, more than the picture on the website suggests.

Rich, malty, and with the characteristic aroma of Yunnan black teas. Fruity tones. Very full-bodied and rich, but smooth. Pleasing and not too tannic, much smoother than typical among te...

Color: dark brown with hints of amber; has a heavy viscosity and a good bit of cloudiness

Feb. 15th, 2011

The initial aroma is malty and deep, typical for a Yunnan gold, but with more fruity qualities, especially of dried fruit. Upon drinking the cup, the aroma becomes more fruity and vegetal, sharing some of the wine-like qualities of a Keemun with some of the vegetal qualities of some Darjeeling, even Darjeeling oolong ...

The dry leaf has an incredibly fruity aroma, like apricot.

This is a strong black tea with a very pleasing aroma and flavor. It is malty like an Assam, but with less edge. Unfortunately, there's only a hint of the pleasing fruity quality that I noticed in the dry leaf. Less bitter than you'd expect, and not very ...

This is a really smooth delicious Yunnan. It is woodsy, with honey and astringent notes mixed in. The aroma is very Yunnan, with a bit of floral around the edges. I brewed about 1.5 teas. for 3.5 minutes. It is so dark as to be almost black. I did do a second infusion of 1/2 the water for about 5 min. and that was...

A smoothie it is. If it weren't for all the spice, woodsiness and a tiny sharp edge, it could just slide down so effortlessly. It smells like new pencils, an old barn in the sun, a little spice, a little chocolate, autumn leaves and an illusive sharpness. It tastes pretty much that way, also. Truly a lovely tea. ...

This is a very nice tea, smooth and sweet, but with some depth to it. It is very characteristic of the Yunnans of the past few years, as it is not as deep, not as spicy nor as chocolatey as it used to was. I found you can do a second infusion if you use half the water for about 5 minutes.

Huh, a black tea made in the style of a green. How 'bout that? The leaves have been hand-rolled in a heated wok so they seem to be like Bi Luo Chun - Green Snail Spring. This lovely gold dust [from the golden bud hairs] covered tea comes from Yunnan Province, China and tastes much like a usual Yunnan, woodsy, a tad...

Let me start by saying, I am not a coffee drinker. For me, the tea I choose to drink throughout the day will be dependent on my mood. This tea would be one that I would use to start my day, as I think it has the ability to give you that initial morning burst that many people claim to get from that first pot of java....

Wow. I love the aroma of this tea...it is much more vegetal than most black teas, clean and fresh, and yet warm too. Smooth and yet relatively full-bodied, but thin relative to some breakfast teas. No astringency.

I do notice the peppery tones characteristic of a dian hong. The aroma is pleasingly complex. Ther...
