Assam TGFOP1 Ananda Second Flush from TeaGschwendner
Style: Assam – Region: Lakhimpur, Assam, India80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 2nd, 2021
This tea is a classic tasting black tea however it is not my favorite and it is mildly harsh (bitter) for me. It's still pretty smooth and not astringent which I like and I would drink it again if someone served it to me. It's a bit expensive though so I probably wouldn't buy it again since there's better stuff out the...

This tea is named somewhat differently in the US vs Europe but I'm pretty sure it's the same. In Germany it's "Assam TGFOP1 Ananda" with "Second Flush" underneath, whereas in the US the grade is omitted in the name, but clarified in the tea's description so I'm pretty sure it's the same thing.
The dry leaf is pleasa...
Irish Breakfast from Frontier
Style: Irish Breakfast – Region: India81 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 21st, 2021
This tea was spot-on in terms of style for Irish Breakfast, and one of the better examples of it at that.
The leaf is broken but the pieces of leaf are still recognizable as such, especially after steeping. The dry leaf has a pleasant aroma that suggests a strong, fresh tea. It infuses fairly quickly to produce a po...
Kumaon Black Tea from Frontier
Style: Black Tea – Region: Kumaon, India79 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 14th, 2021
I've been curious about teas from the Kumaon region of India for some time, but had yet to get my hands on one until now. What a surprise when the local food co-op got this in stock in their display of Frontier's bulk teas and spices!
The leaf is very fine, and strongly aromatic. The still-rather-intact leaf is tiny...

This tea is definitely very unique but super tasty. It kind of tastes like dried fruit and it’s a little spicy but not super harsh or anything. If you’re looking for an interesting yet tasty tea that’s different from your average breakfast tea, try this!

Feb. 24th, 2021
Part of Upton's Great Tea Race Collection, this Darjeeling crosses the finish line with a fine aroma and impressive flavor. There are notes of caramel, fresh leaves, and mild tannins. It is very expensive however - it costs 3 times the price of an ordinary Darjeeling, but does not offer 3 times the quality imo. Nice...

Half-litre pot at home, made from a sample included in the tea company's Advent Tea Calendar (2020) and consisting of fine, wiry leaves of Assam tea in all shades of brown. Pours clear dark copper brown (against white china) with no sediment. Clear aroma of Assam leaves, quite malty but not aggressive at all. Intense, ...

Half-litre cup at home, made from fine small green, brown and yellow leaves. Pours clear peach yellow (against white china) with no sediment. Very mild aroma of fresh leaves, much faintier than the loose leaves themselves emit. Mild, leafy but fresh and pure flavour of black tea, with floral touches. A delicate palate,...

Half-litre pot at home, made from a blend of seven different strong and flavourful black teas (the company does not specify which ones, but repeats it trice in the description of the tea that the teas are strong; hm...). Pours clear copper brown (against white china) with no sediment. Clear, malty aroma of Assam, with ...

Taylor's has/had a "Pure Assam". Does the absence of that adjective here make this one "impure" by default? :-)
Seriously, I don't know if "Assam Tea" is the same as "Pure Assam", repackaged and rebranded, or a parallel offering. It has been a few years since I tried and reviewed "Pure Assam", so I can't compare...
Assam Tea Bags from Taylors of Harrogate
Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India68 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

The dry tea has almost no odor at all. The teabag smells slightly woody, which could either be from the tea or the paper. The tea looks to be CTC pellets that were ground up further. I wonder if the "Pure Assam" that this tea seems to have replaced was orthodox tea and that's the difference.
This tea smells tannic a...
Organic Darjeeling from Harney and Sons

I suspected something was wrong with the quality (or lack thereof) of this tea when I opened up the tin and there was no scent. (Side note: The best by date isn't for about 2 years, so that's not the issue.) Some teas have a very, very light scent, though. So, I tried to suspend judgment and brewed a cup as the packagi...

A blend of Assam teas that turns out to be smooth and flavorful, and offered at an excellent price by Upton. It has been one of their top sellers, for a long time, and it is not hard to see why. This does not have the rough edges or iron notes that some breakfast teas have. It is earthy, nutty, and not a challenge t...

The dry tea is chopped up quite fine. It looks like a typical Darjeeling, having a range of colors from light green to a dark brown, indicating a range of oxidations. Taylor's puts 2.5 grams of tea in their bags, splitting the difference between the typical American 2 grams and the 3 grams of many English bagged teas.

I was excited and curious to order from TeaSource, and this was one of the first teas I tried. I have been impressed with all of the teas I've tried, including this one.
The leaf is strongly aromatic and pleasant, mostly a malty smell, and it also gives off the sense that this tea packs a punch.

Darjeeling Black Tea from Bigelow Tea

We first found this in an estate-sale pantry. Then my wife bought another box, because she enjoyed it as a morning and midday tea, when she didn't want something quite as potent as her favorite Assam or Irish breakfast blends. Loath to pilfer her teas and disharmonize domestic tranquility, I've just had a couple bags...

It was a bit of challenge to describe the aroma. I finally decided on 'sweet pine'. There is a 'wood' aroma with a definite 'sweet' under tone. The liquor is a deep amber color, malty. I'm not catching any 'peppery' after taste. A decent Assam. Good price for a good tea.

At first glance, the tea looks odd for Twinings. Twinings's loose teas are usually broken leaf, but the pieces are much larger and appear to be better quality than what goes into the teabags. The Darjeeling is different. The loose tea pieces are tiny and uniform and look exactly like what goes into the teabags. Like mo...

Ahmad Tea provides some of the best values in entry-level loose leaf tea out there.
Their Kalami Assam beautifully exemplifies all that we adore about Assam teas. The leaf aroma is malty, earthy, and slightly vegetal.
