This photo shows a tulsi or holy basil plant (Ocimum tenuiflorum) of the purple-leafed variety, the one associated with Krishna in Indian tradition.

This plant is visually identifiable as a species of basil, with similar flowers (this plant is just starting to bloom) and a similar growth-habit. Compared to most varieties of sweet basil, the leaves are less pointy and slightly smaller.
