Peppermint (Mentha x. piperita) Plant

Peppermint plant, showing opposite, oval-shaped leaves with slight points, and dark purple-red stemsView Full Resolution

This photo shows peppermint plants growing. Relative to spearmint, the leaf margins are much less serrated. On this particular plant, the leaves are more oval-shaped, but this is not universal. Note the distinctive red-purple stems, with this reddish hue extending slightly to the larger veins of mature leaves, and the margiins of young leaves.

This reddish-purple color to the stems is a distinctive feature of peppermint and one of the easiest ways to tell it apart from other mints, which rarely exhibit this characteristic.
