Yaupon (Ilex vomitoria) in Winter, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida
This photo shows a Yaupon plant in winter. The evergreen leaves look noticeably tough, and have a yellow-green color here, whereas the berries are a vibrant red color. This species has bird-dispersed seeds, and the red color serves to make the berries easily visible to birds.
Note the mostly dead vegetation in the background; although Florida doesn't get that cold in the winter, many plants in this area still go dormant.
