Vanilla Caramel Black Tea comes in holiday packs and advent calendars at ALDI, and is a decent drink for the price, as long as one oversteeps it according to conventional measures.
Upon ripping open the wrapper and sniffing within, the dry aroma was nearly nonexistent, with a faint hint of vanilla tea. This tempered expectations. When pouring boiling water over the bag and into the cup, however, the caramel especially wafted strongly upward and for several feet into the room. Seldom have I noticed such a disparity between the strength of the in-cup aroma and lack of it in dry form! Both flavors balanced well, with a slight tilt toward the caramel, which became more prominent in the aftertaste.
Quantity lacks here; even the wet bag is only about half full. Two ways to deal with this (besides complain) are to steep a really long time, or use two bags, which cuts into the value rating a lot. I tried both, and offer good news: one can do a one-bag long brew—8 or 9 minutes—with little difference in taste from half the time at twice the tea (and twice the caffeine). The base black tea used here doesn't get overly bitter after long steeping, and the flavors have a chance to leach out more fully.
