Tea being grown near Sui'an, Fujian

Dark green tea plants in a field showing mostly mature leaves, with nearly all new shoots cleanly cut offView Full Resolution

This photo shows a garden of tea plants, near Sui'an (绥安镇) in Zhangpu county(漳浦) of China's Fujian province. This region is very close to the coast. Fujian is famous for tea production, but Zhangpu is virtually unknown in the west. I was unable to verify if any of the teas listed on our site are produced here.

This photo, taken in April, shows almost exclusively large, mature leaves with a tough, almost leathery appearance typical of mature leaves on a broadleaf evergreen plant like Camellia sinensis. If you look closely, you'll see that all the top parts, with the new growth and leaf buds, has been cut off, reflecting the fact that the tea has been recently harvested. A single new leaf sprout is visible towards the lower left of the photo.
