Broken leaf has a flakey appearance, and a pleasing aroma.
Brewed 4 minutes as recommended; I was worried this might be astringent because broken-leaf oolongs often are lower-quality, but this was pleasingly smooth. Aroma is smoky and richly fruity...reminiscent of some Wuyi Qi Lan. In spite of the very dark color, there's only a light roast in the aroma. Is this more oxidized than roasted? Yet the appearance of the leaf suggests otherwise.
Very gentle, but complex flavor. This one really surprised me relative to how the leaf looked.
I experimented a bit with steeping, and I prefer a longer steeping time, because this tea is so smooth and the aroma becomes more complex this way. This tea performed well with multiple infusions. The later cups have more roast and slightly more of a skunky quality (I think this is actually a good thing).
I thought this tea good, but it's a little on the pricey side for what it was; it's certainly not a contender for the best Wuyi oolongs I've tried. It is fair trade and organic certified, though, which is a plus. I thought it tasted good given the broken nature of the leaf.
