I would not recognize this tea as sencha from either the appearance of the leaves or the aroma of the dried leaf or brewed cup. There's only a faint suggestion of the characteristic sencha aroma, barely emerging and then vanishing.
The aroma is vegetal, but less seaweedy than sencha, and more savory. Tastes more similar to other green teas I've tried from Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos, than to anything from Japan. A significant umami flavour is present.
Very full-bodied...slightly opaque when brewed.
I found Upton's brewing instructions to be right-on but I would recommend using less leaf. This is a strong and flavorful tea, more so than most green teas, and I think some would find it bit overpowering unless less leaf is used.
