An inexpensive tea of surprisingly good quality.
Dry leaf smells wonderful, suggesting fresh and savory qualities of some higher-grade green teas, but also reminding me a lot of raw Pu-erh.
Upon brewing though, there's not as much aroma in the cup as the dry leaf suggests. The brewed cup is light in color and body. It has a very light but fresh aroma that reminds me a lot of the smell of steam-ironing clean linens. The cup is airy and seems to vanish as I drink it...an ethereal experience which contrasts strangely with the robust appearance of the leaf. If brewed more strongly, smoky notes come out, a lot like some raw Pu-erh.
I find this tea tastes dramatically better when brewed with boiling water. Brewing this way brings out the smokiness and more herbaceous and vegetal characteristics, making it taste more like raw Pu-erh. However, the cup is more astringent.
Resteeps well: the large leaves are slow to infuse and the second cup was nearly as flavorful as the first, when brewing Western-style with a teaspoon and a half of leaf and a 2-3 minute first steep. Easily makes three steeps if the last steep is long (12-15 min.)
