This is a somewhat sweet and strong chai, heavy on the cloves, cinnamon and cardamom, and with a little peppery nature to the aroma as well. It uses a pleasantly potent Ceylon base tea, along with other spices sourced from a farmers' association in Sri Lanka.

It took some tongue acclimation for this lover of Assam to get used to a chai made from a clearly different sort of black tea, but it mostly works. It swaps out the rich maltiness of Assam for a drier, sharper Ceylon foundation that gets really dark, fast. This is necessary because they don't skimp on the spices. Many Ceylons also would be overwhelmed, but the one used here holds its own against the spices, and complements them. While I still like upper-quality Assam-based chais better, this blend competes well with all but those.

The retail/in-store cost drags slightly on this tea's rating, though 6 boxes for $23.40 on the website (as of this writing) is truly a good deal. If you are a devoted advocate or feeling particularly benevolent, then sure, it may be worth the 2.5x retail markup to support the charity behind the tea, though a lot of that money is dribbled away along the way. Yet for the typical consumer, there's sticker shock involved in paying that much. The online price indeed is far friendlier and more direct.
