Commercial Description

Twinings has been blending my family tea for years. Today, I am proud to continue this tradition with the tea celebrated throughout the world known as Twinings Earl Grey. Legend has it, that my ancestor, the second Earl Grey, was presented with this exquisite recipe by an envoy on his return from China.

Grocery store teas often deserve more credit than they are sometimes granted by those who graduate to better teas. Are there better Earl Grey teas out there? You bet. Is this, when doctored up a bit with some cream and sugar, a reasonable tasty beverage? It is.

Disclaimer out of the way, this Earl Grey has just enough of a (vaguely lemon'ish) bergamont to carry a single steep in a small cup. After that you're left with a one-note black with very little aroma and too much astringency.

A nice, moderately strong tea with a small dose of bergamot that really keeps things from getting boring.

This is a very ordinary tea. The bergamot tastes old and stale, and has a smoky, stale bouquet.
There are many better choices available.

This tea reminds me a bit of Twinings' Russian Caravan: a nice but smoothy black tea, naturally sweet.
Earl Grey has some bergamot and vanilla notes too.

OK - decent EG, light in terms of flavor and caffeine level. I think Tazo EG is far better.
I usually get a box of 100 or 144 from Costco, so decent value.

This was my first time tasting an Earl Grey tea. I definitely appreciated the bergamot orange balancing out the black tea flavor a bit, though it still wasn't enough for me to outright enjoy this tea. On its own, it was still too tanniny, or something (bitter isn't quite the right word). With food (I had fried eggs) it was definitely more enjoyable, so I can see why teas like this are considered "breakfast" teas. Now that I have a baseline for what to expect, I need to try a higher quality version of this tea to give a real test.

Until then, my apologies to Captain Picard -- but your tea is not for me. ;-)

The first thing that struck me about this tea was the aroma, this might be the first Earl Grey I have sampled where you can smell the tea under the Bergamot. So often with Earl Grey I can never get a feel for the tea's aroma because I am too busy being kicked in the face with Bergamot. The aroma is fantastic, smooth and slightly creamy, which blends well with the Bergamot's zinginess.

The aroma matches the taste, smooth and creamy! In my opinion this is the perfect cup of Earl, mild and not overwhelming. It has been theorized by my Early Grey fanatic boyfriend that I, in fact, do not actually like Earl Grey because I don't enjoy the intense Bergamot. Finally I found an Early Grey that I have no problem drinking a bunch of, rather than just a cup here and there. Victory for Twinnings!

This was the first Earl Grey I ever had, and so I cannot help but compare every Earl Grey since with this one. Probably a bad habit, as this is not an exemplary blend.

The overall flavor is pleasant, mild, and unobtrusive. The scent leaves something to be desired, as does the strength. As Earl Greys go, this one is very mild, making it a decent introduction to the blend - though, for more experienced drinkers, it is unsatisfactory. One plus is that it is so mild that oversteeping does not lead to the typical bitterness, in my experience. However, I have since come to look for much stronger flavor in my Earl Grey.
