Tea Plantations in Galle District, Sri Lanka
This is one of my favorite photos of tea plantations anywhere. Neat rows of tea plants are in the foreground, planted on a gently sloping hillside, growing with numerous tall trees interspersed in them. The trees are relatively sparse and have straight, gray trunks, with only moderately dense leaves at the top. The practice of growing trees interspersed with other crops has numerous benefits both to human agriculture and to the environment.
Behind this scene is dense fog or clouds low to the ground, with relatively clearer mountains rising above them.
A single exposed straight path is visible to the left, cutting through the tea fields, and showing the yellowish-brown color of the soil.
The author titled this photo "tea in the highlands", and this photo may be taken in one of the higher areas of Galle district, but this district of Sri Lanka is coastal and not one of the areas where true "high grown" tea is produce; these districts are in the center of the island, where the altitude is much higher.
