About Darrang, Assam, India
Darrang is a district in lower Assam, India, located on the north banks of the Brahmaputra river. The district used to be very large, but has seen two reductions in size: one in 1983 with the founding of Sonitpur district, and another in 2004 with the creation of Udalguri district. Older maps show Darrang extending to the north border of Assam with Bhutan and Arunachal pradesh, but the district no longer extends that far, and is now bordered to the north by Udalguri.Currently, Darrang shares a complex-shaped border to the north with Udalguri, and a very small border to the east with Sonitpur.
Darrang produces tea, and single-origin teas from here are sometimes available in the West. However, there are far more tea gardens producing single-origin tea, located in the new Udalguri district, and older maps and sources lump these districts together, so teas labeled as being produced in "Darrang" may not necessarily originate here.
