I only had one bag of this, so I brewed it according to the instructions - straight off the boil and let steep for four minutes. Neither the leaves or the brewed tea had a very strong aroma. I'm not sure what to compare it to: it was something dark and faintly bitter smelling, but not like coffee or chocolate. More like some kind of tobacco.
The taste, however, was strong and pleasant. Brewing it according to the instructions produced a cup of tea that was intensely, intensely malty. That flavor nearly overwhelmed all others, though there was some bitterness and a little bit of tannin (though less than I would have expected for such a strong brewing).
I really like malty things, so I'm biased in favor of this tea. I found it strong, intense, and a great thing to drink early in the day. I felt good after finishing it. Relatedly, I happened to be eating a clementine when I tried the tea, and the two tastes went really well together.
