I had the opportunity to try some top-notch Assams lately, top grades of single estate teas, and this was a much lower grade, broken leaf, and blended, but it was surprisingly good for what it is.
The brewed cup isn't quite as malty as I usually expect for an Assam. It has some pleasant fruity notes in the aroma, and only a hint of malt. It is surprisingly fresh and light, with a hint of aromatic notes I expect more in high-grown teas than in Assam. Flavor is very bold, with a moderate bitterness all the way through, but also a strong savory flavor. Edgy.
Upton recommends brewing 3-4 minutes; I think this is a bit on the long side. This tea infuses quickly and 3 minutes is the most I'd recommend, I think 1-2 is good if you don't want a very strong cup.
I was able to resteep this tea once, especially if using a shorter first steep, but the second cup wasn't quite as complex or satisfying.
Good price. Compare to Ahmad Tea's Barooti Assam, my mainstay among broken-leaf Assams...that tea is a similar broken grade, much cheaper, but I think not quite as complex or robust. I think it would be worth paying more for this blend.
