Sencha of the Autumn Moon from Obubu Tea

Style: Sencha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

77 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

The aroma of the fairly massive leaves is very green, a mix of edamame, spinach, and a bit of hay and grass. It is not the most complex Sencha I have ever sniffed, but the aroma is strong and a good blend of sweet and green, I enjoy it and can certainly see this being an excellent tea to sniff while focusing on the moo...

Houjicha Amber Roast from Obubu Tea

Style: Hojicha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 1st, 2014

The aroma of this Houjicha is fun, it starts off as sweet roasted marshmallows and a touch of campfire, it then transitions to toasted sesame, burnt grass, and lastly a tiny wisp of distant sea air. I very much so had a vision pop into my mind of roasted marshmallows on a beach, the fire made from driftwood and sea gra...

Sencha of the Summer Sun from Obubu Tea

Style: Sencha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 20th, 2014

The aroma of the vibrantly green leaves is sweet, a blend of sweet hay, grass, and spinach. There is a touch of seaweed at the finish giving the tea a bit of that sea-side aroma that I so love in teas. It might be the name playing havoc with my sense, but the aroma really does remind me of summer.

The first steep i...

Houjicha - Dark Roast from Obubu Tea

Style: Hojicha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 19th, 2014

The aroma is a blend of cedar, smoke, roasted tea, and autumn leaves. Brewing the leaves brings out rich earthy notes along with the smoke and cedar. The liquid sans leaves is sweet like fresh hay and roasted nuts.

The taste richly roasted and faintly smoked that fades to a sweet aftertaste. This tea tastes like au...

Kyobancha from Obubu Tea

Style: Kyobancha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 27th, 2013

The aroma is delightfully loamy and mildly roasted, it reminds me of the forest at the end of autumn. Brewing the tea makes the roasted aroma and loamy aroma more intense and it brings in notes of umami as well.

The taste is earthy, loamy, and a hint of woody with very mild roasted flavor. I have to be careful to n...

The aroma of these beautiful flowers is very mild, sweet and tangy like pickled peaches with a hint of flower and salt.

The flavor is incredible, I can see some people not liking it, but for me it is perfection. The taste is smooth and creamy mixing with floral notes and nuttiness. It mixes really well with other t...

Having sampled a number of roasts of Obubu Hojicha, I can definitely say this is my favorite. Sweet, smooth and very soothing. An earthy cup where the smokey flavor does not overwhelm the tea's natural flavor.

This tea manages to embody everything wonderful about autumn, meaning it smells very smoky and richly roasted. Very clean and very earthy!

The flavor is intensely complex! Very rich and resinous with smoky notes and a sweet aftertaste. Delicious!

Sencha of the Earth from Obubu Tea

Style: Sencha – Region: Kyoto, Japan

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 16th, 2013

Very different from any other sencha I have tried. Complex, rich, and interesting. I would especially recommend this for people who don't like the fresh grassy and seaweedy tones of sencha, because it had the least of these characteristics of among any sencha I've tried. It was ever-so-slightly more oolong-like.

Roasting the bancha leaves produces a tea that combines the best of hojicha and bancha together in one brew. The light grassy flavors are enhanced by the light smokiness, and the astringency is cut to a minimum. The sample I had of this was used up quickly as I tried brewing it both hot and cold the same day, and both ...

Genmaicha is one of those teas that is really comforting, and always goes well with food. But some of the versions available in the US are really of poor quality. By offering you the roasted brown rice in this way you can adjust proportions and use it with what ever tea you prefer. I had some samples of sencha that wer...

A very nice sencha that brews up well in 4 infusions, keeping a bright green color and lightly savory flavor. Bright, lightly buttery, and yes a small amount of bitterness in the first brew. But a good kind of bitterness like fresh mustard greens or spinach. Shipped direct from Japan, this tea is actually quite reasona...

This tea was a very pleasant surprise, being extremely refreshing and full of nice green tea flavor. This is a true 'aracha' or farmer's tea, made from leaves and twigs of the same tea bushes used to make Obubu's excellent sencha teas. It has a mild sweetness and an aroma that is very much of green vegetal quality. Not...
