About Banten, Indonesia
Banten is a province in Indonesia, the westernmost province on the island of Java. It is bordered by the city/province of Jakarta, and West Java, to the east. Banten had previously been part of West Java, but was split into its own province in 2000.Most of the region consists of lowlands, but the province has volcanic mountains reaching over 6000ft (just under 1000m) in elevation. The climate is tropical with a strong seasonal pattern of precipitation, with a wet season November through March, corresponding to west winds, and a drier season from July through September, corresponding to east winds. The region's weather is influenced heavily by the El Niño oscillation, with a harsher dry season during El Niño years.
Banten is not among the top three tea-producing regions of Indonesia, but it does produce some tea, and teas here are sporadically available in the West through specialty retailers. The Harendong organic tea estate is one producer in the region.
