The dry leaf has a very strong, sweet, and deep fruity aroma, like candied fruit.
When I brewed the cup, for only 3 minutes, the initial aroma was among the most powerful of any Assam I have tried. This tea is strong, with an edge and a good amount of bitterness, but it is also somewhat light. Tastes more high-grown than a typical Assam. But...not overwhelmingly strong flavor-wise. Slightly less of the malty tones and light body relative to the strength of the aroma.
This is an example not of a typical Assam, but an Assam that exhibits the qualities I like most in this style of tea, without being too different or deviant in any way. So, while I did not find this the most interesting tea, I could see making this the default Assam I would want to stock in my cupboard. And, of course, it's out of stock and has been removed from Upton's listings...but that's what makes the world of tea interesting; there will be more to come!
