My all-time favorite example of Tulsi or holy basil is the purple-leafed variety sold by Upton Tea Imports. Since I had been highly impressed by the the green-leafed (Rama) and Vana varieties from Mountain Rose Herbs, liking each much better than their counterparts from Upton, I was excited to try this one.
It was ...
Holy Basil, Vana (Tulsi) from Mountain Rose Herbs
Style: Vana Tulsi – Region: India83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

Dry leaf smells complex, like dried ginger and anise, with a hint of straw or hay. Much more complex than the only other example of Vana tulsi that I've tried.
Brews up a very strong, dark cup relative to the amount of leaf used. The brewed cup has a spicy and very complex aroma, and a piquant (sharp but enjoyable...

A truly artisanal example of this herb. Tastes the closest to the fresh-harvested, home-grown example of this herb than any other one I have bought through a company. Astonishing complexity for Rama Tulsi.
I tried this some time ago, and I think it may not have been terribly fresh; this was a fresh batch which a f...
Tulsi (Holy Basil) from Shanti Tea

This is the green leaf, or Rama Tulsi. I prefer the red-leaf, or Krishna tulsi, but this is actually my favorite example of the green-leafed variety that I've tried.
I find green tulsi can sometimes have a metallic quality, and this quality is thankfully greatly diminished in this sample. This tulsi is smoother an...
Tulsi - Indian Holy Basil from Maya Tea
Style: Tulsi / Holy Basil – Region: ?????67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5

This was recognizable as tulsi, but quite different from other sources of tulsi that I have sampled. Very interesting to sample!
It had much less clove in the aroma, but was still quite spicy, and was also very lemoney. The lemon in the aroma was what made this one stand out.
Flavor is relatively smooth...a lit...
Wild Forest Holy Basil Organic from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Vana Tulsi – Region: India80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

Aroma mostly of licorice, but more complex, herbaceous, and spicy. Very summery aroma; this smells much more like familiar sweet basil and less like holy basil, which makes sense, as Vana tulsi is the same species as sweet basil, and a different one from the Rama and Krishna Holy basil, which I have tried (and drink r...

I've now tried quite a few different sources of tulsi and I can say that this is one of the best. This is the first blend I've tried--in the past I've only had Rama or Krishna tulsi, and I tend to prefer Krishna tulsi as it's smoother.
I brewed this with boiling water and let it steep for 15 minutes. Steeping less...
Holy Basil Green Leaf from Upton Tea Imports

Very different from the purple-leaf variety, which I like better.
This has a very strong metallic character in the taste, and the aroma suggests a metallic character too. The aroma is more similar to the purple variety, perhaps less of a cinnamon character and more clove.
I've also tried the green-leafed Tulsi f...
Holy Basil Purple Leaf from Upton Tea Imports

I had not tried tulsi (except possibly unknowingly as a seasoning) when I sampled this, and I fell in love after the first sip. The aroma is hard to describe, but very complex...I especially notice the anise and cinnamon, but I am usually not the biggest fan of these aromas, and I loved this tea. This is a very rich,...
