Commercial Description

Hibiscus, also known as rosemallow, is a flowering plant belonging to the same family as cocoa and cotton. The flowers are popular as an herbal tea, especially in Caribbean and Latin American countries. They are often combined with other herbs or fruit juices and they impart a cheery red color and tart flavor.

I tend to not like hibiscus tea hot, but I do enjoy it as an iced drink on very hot days. To this end I like to brew it very weakly. It can be quite refreshing, if you want a fruit-like drink that does not contain any sugar or sweetness.

I thought this particular batch was quite good, and very reasonably priced for organic certified. I recall the display claiming fair trade certification too, but I do not see this listed on Frontier's site so I will err on the side of caution on that one and assume this is just organic certified.

I've had a coarser cut hibiscus tea from Upton Tea Imports, but I did not notice any diminished flavor. If anything, there may be slightly less of the cooked fruit quality that I dislike (but only slightly) in this batch. One thing that I disliked about this batch though, a small amount of particulate matter does escape through most strainers, which can cause the bottom of the cup to get too strong tasting as it continues to steep.

My preferred recipe for an iced tea from this drink is to use 1 teaspoon of leaf per every 2 cups, and to steep only briefly, for 1-2 minutes. This produces a tangy (but not overwhelmingly sour) drink that actually very closely resembles dilute, unsweetened cranberry juice in flavor.
