For a free sample from Upton, I was very impressed with this tea. I have not explored many black teas yet, and am not usually a huge fan of them. I prefer green and white tea. This being said, I decided to try this out since it showed up in my last shipment from Upton. I was quite surprised when I steeped my first cup. The aroma and initial flavor did not grab my attention or anything. As I drank, however, I grew to appreciate the tea for its consistent and pleasant taste. It is quite smooth while having just a touch of astringency. I really enjoyed the chocolate and malty undertones in the flavor. Overall a very enjoyable tea, and the price cannot be beat.

A very enjoyable tea for a very reasonable price. I agree with Upton that it is versatile, and I found it easy to enjoy (I shared it with two others and they both also liked it). This is the second excellent Indonesian tea I've sampled recently, and I think it ties for my two favorite teas from this region.
The dry leaf had a potent and pleasant smell.
Upon brewing, this tea is bold and dark. The cup isn't very aromatic and the first sip didn't grab my attention, but the more I drank, the more I enjoyed it. Towards the bottom of the cup a more malty aroma comes out. The rich flavor is strongly savory (umami) for a black tea, lightly sweet and slightly bitter. It reminded me of broken-leaf Kenyan teas, and had a balance of warming and cooling qualities. The finish is clean, with an almost minty note. Seems pretty caffeinated.
The second cup is also surprisingly enjoyable...this cup tasted bright and clean, like clean stone. This tea resteeps better than any broken-leaf black tea I've tried in a very long time.
I can't easily pin down exactly what it is that makes me like this tea so much, but I do. I also found it grew on me. The price is also great.
I heartily recommend this one to anyone who enjoys black tea.
