White Peony - Organic
|
Commercial Description
White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) is the most common style of traditional white tea and consists of two tealeaves and a silvery bud. Bai Mu Dan is prized for its smooth, sweet flavor and slightly woody, toasted aroma. Gentle processing and a unique withering process result in an amber-orange infusion with low astringency, weighty mouth-feel and a mild flavor that pairs well with most foods.

I'll start by saying I'm new to white teas, so I do not know exactly what a typical white tastes like. But the large leaves have a beautiful honey aroma that also came through after steeping. I could smell another slightly woody/nutty flavor, but couldn't identify it until I read the package "Pure White Tea with accents of toasted chestnut and honey". Oh of course, it's chestnut! There was also a light vegetal scent. The flavor is very similar to the aroma- a smooth honey taste, along with toasty chestnut, with a light vegetal aftertaste. Almost like green tea, but lighter and sweeter. It is soothing and refreshing at the same time.

A disappointment, especially compared to Rishi's other offerings. The brewed tea is amber in color. The aroma is bold and peppery without being sharp; it almost suggests celery, but without the fresh vegetal notes most white teas have. There's not much bitterness, but there's a fair amount of sourness. This tea is remarkably full-bodied even though the aroma is weak.
I am not a fan of this tea. The price is low for this style, but still pricier than many other teas. People who like white teas may not like this one; I found it to be quite atypical of its style.
