Commercial Description

Twinings has been blending my family tea for years. Today, I am proud to continue this tradition with the tea celebrated throughout the world known as Twinings Earl Grey. Legend has it, that my ancestor, the second Earl Grey, was presented with this exquisite recipe by an envoy on his return from China.

The dry tea is finely chopped and smells strongly of citrus. There are a few white flecks in the bag that according to the ingredients are probably bergamot peel.

I'm pretty sure that the citrus in Twinings Earl Grey is a blend. The bergamot is pronounced (as it should be in an Earl Grey), but I also taste sweet orange and grapefruit. The tea itself is mild. I can taste a bit of maltiness under the citrus, but it's thin-bodied with almost no bitterness or astringency. I prefer Earl Grey made with more flavorful tea. As the tea cools, the fruit flavor and aroma intensify to a nice fruitiness. A mild bitterness also appears at the sides of the tongue.

Twinings is comparable in quality to Bigelow, which I slightly prefer, but is a little bit more expensive. Its main selling point is that it's easy to find in a grocery store. There are many brands available online, both bagged and loose, that are higher quality and better tasting.

I’m not an expert on earl gray. This may be the first I’ve ever had.

Prep: 200F, 5min, 2.5tsp, 16oz

Aroma - There is a ton of citrus exploding out of the cup. I can’t pick up much else, honestly.

Flavor: A little bit of orange peel, more orange zesty notes. It’s pretty hard to get to the actual tea. This almost reminds me of a chocolate covered orange candy.

Value: This is budget tea. It’s priced fair.

Cup at home, made from a teabag. Pours hazy dark brown (against white china) with sediment. Intense aroma of malt, bergamot oil, citrus and, well, horse manure, if you ask me, with some leafy notes of black tea. Bitter flavour of black tea, with some malty notes (Assam?) and citric touches and hints of bergamot oil. Astringent palate with leafy and bergamot notes and very mild citric hint. Well, I like a good Early Grey but this one is, well, rather disappointing, especially in its aroma. I do not relish in the smell or taste of animal excrements (never had a Kopi Luwak in my life). I followed the instructions on the packaging, but it seems to me that I had overbrewed it in the end. The flavour, and certainly the scent, is not light, as the packaging says. Well, that was it. Fortunately, it wasn't expensive (32 DKK for a box of 25 bags).

I must confess this tea was like a sort of introduction for me to the world of teas. I used to have it as a child on Sunday afternoons by my father. We had it strong and with plenty of sugar.

I'd say that this tea offers a very respectable value for money. In my area, it can be found easily (even in not specialized shops) and for an affordable price. This earl grey is fragrant and offers a strong and very enjoyable scent of bergamot. It goes well as an afternoon tea or with desserts.

It can be found in tea bags or loose leaf, which they sell in small tin cans. I must say I prefer the loose leaf version.

I got this from a restaurant hot-tea selection box and took home an extra bag to taste-test on good well water. The bergamot was somewhat feeble throughout the consumption experience. Still, it's among the better Twinings teas I've had (yes, I realize that's not saying much).

Sweetened, as I always do, this product delivered an unexpectedly creamy, vanilla-like flavor and in-cup aroma that somewhat offset the lack of a more-robust bergamot level. This isn't advertised as an "Earl Grey Creme", but tasted a good deal like one to me—albeit nowhere nearly as rich as a few loose-leaf EGCs I've had recently. Maybe there's some lemon in this too, which I detected more from the otherwise rather muted dry-bag aroma and aftertaste than from the in-cup flavor and scent. The wet bag exuded almost no aroma, so this tea was quite efficient at releasing whatever it had into the cup. I do wish it had more, though; this tea has the potential to be a high-quality "semi-creamy" Earl Grey if Twinings can turn up the intensity dial a couple notches, across-the-board. Even though I didn't buy the tea directly, the "value" rating is good, based on prices I've seen at retail outlets like Wal-Mart.

I like this as a very neutral delicious tasting Earl grey. The bergamot is much more mild than other teas which makes it perfect to go with various desserts.

Just spent a week drinking this tea. We were on a week long backpacking trip and since She Who Must Be Obeyed likes Earl Grey I packed this. Drank it every morning. It was hot, caffeinated and quite enjoyable, actually. Smoother and much more bergamot flavor than the bag of Bigelow's Earl Grey that had somehow hitched a ride. It made some cold windy mornings quite civilized.
