Thank you to Mighty Leaf for this sample! Overall I haven't been as impressed with the green teas from Mighty Leaf as the black ones, but I like this one a bit more. This was a very atypical example of a kukicha / twig tea, much more full-flavored than I expected.
I was intrigued by how the leaf smells...it smells...
Kukicha from Adagio Teas

I really enjoyed this one. It's a little atypical for a kukicha, slightly bolder than usual.
The dry leaf smelled to me almost like a mix of a very high-quality tea and a lower-quality tea, with sweet tones, suggestive of a brothy, umami-laden green tea, mixed with a low grade sencha.
Upon brewing, I kind of get...
Organic China Ku-ki Cha from Upton Tea Imports

I was solidly disappointed with this one. Upton's offerings of Japanese styles of tea produced in Japan have been hit-or-miss for me; this and their Sencha were pretty poor, but their Chinese Gyokuro (ZG81) was a pleasant surprise.
Fairly twiggy, mostly stem. Too much astringency and sourness for me. I tried usin...
Kukicha Green Tea from Wegmans

I really love this style of tea, and I think it's hard to go wrong with it. This is not my favorite kukicha, but I like it very much. The dry leaf has a very large proportion of fine powder in it, and proportionately less stem. Accordingly, the cup brews an opaque green color, not bright like Matcha but darker and g...

Very fresh, more vegetal aroma than most kukicha I've had. Liquor is exceptionally clear, flavor is exceptionally smooth, sweet even. Less twiggy, yet also less sencha-like. Very mild, but very pleasant. Very little astringency.
This is not the most complex tea I've had, but it's certainly very balanced. Beside...
Organic KuKi Cha Green Kamakura from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Kukicha – Region: Kanagawa, Japan73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

The aroma of the dry tea is straw-like, but the brewed tea is a lot more like sencha, including a hint of the characteristic seaweed-like quality. In many ways it's typical for a Japanese green tea. There are a few woody tones in the aroma but they have a very different character from the woody qualities present in s...
