Yerba Mate, Loose from Wegmans

Style: Yerba Maté – Region: ?????

I was not impressed by this Yerba mate. I'm no expert in Mate but I've tried a variety of sources, green and roasted, and this one is probably the worst I've tried of all the green yerba mate I've sampled.

The dry leaf is very finely broken, full of fine dust, which makes brewing quite messy. Not particularly arom...

Premium Yerba Mate Buds from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Yerba Maté – Region: Paraguay

The minute I heard about this new and unusual offering, I was fascinated and wanted to try it. Although I'm glad I did, I found this to be disappointing: I did not enjoy it as much as even a typical black tea, or as much as typical Yerba mate, whether green or roasted. I also found it to be very similar in flavor and...

Loose Dark Roast Organic Yerba Mate from Mate Factor

Style: Yerba Maté – Region: Brazil

87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

Outstanding. Although this is described as "dark roast", it's greener than a lot of other roasted Yerba mate. The roast is not uniform, and the dry leaf has just as much green as dark brown pieces. I think this mix of roast imparts a complexity to the aroma: it is simultaneously deep and fresh.

The brewed cup is ...

Loose Fresh Green Yerba Mate from Mate Factor

Style: Yerba Maté – Region: Brazil

70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

Very good in the end, but I found this one tough to brew properly. The package gives several different ways of preparing, but doesn't specify brewing instructions in much detail. For tea-like brewing, which I used, the package gave the vague and broad recommendation of 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon per cup, and steeping...

Style: Yerba Maté – Region: Argentina

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

Very rich and complex, and significantly different from other yerba mate I've tried, although definitely with the characteristic qualities of yerba mate. Overall green character with no evidence of roast.

Aroma is of straw with a hint of tobacco, licorice, and cinnamon. Flavor is slightly sweet, with a very sweet ...

Style: Yerba Maté – Region: Brazil

77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

Naturally very sweet. The roast is mellow and does not seem to impart any bitterness or burnt qualities. A creamy, vanilla-like quality is dominant in the aroma. A hint of smokiness is present, especially in the aftertaste. The flavor and aroma of this drink are very pleasant and complex.

I have tried brewing th...

Very smooth flavor, yet tobacco-like in aroma, almost to the point of being harsh. The aroma is also reminiscent of wood, earth, and stone. A strange and rather strong sweetness is present, especially in the aftertaste.

I find Upton's recommendations to be off. I prefer to steep only a few minutes, and use less l...
