This is the style of brown oolong that generations of Americans have loved. It is the toasty flavor that many enjoy. Don’t worry about the stems, it is traditionally made this way in Taiwan.

The H&S Formosa Oolong was my first experience with Taiwanese oolong-style tea. As such, I had no idea what to expect going in to it.

Now, I'm not a really big oolong drinker. I mostly like blacks and Japanese greens. As such, my only other experience with oolong (at this time) is a Chinese TGY. Compared to that, this one has a wonderfully refreshing toasted flavour to it, almost like a less pronounced Hojicha. I suspect this is because of the presence of the stems. The scent is similar, with a far more pronounced green tea-like vegetal scent under the toasty floral black tea aroma.

It brews up just like in the picture, which is a beautiful yellow-amber, almost like liquid gold.

Like most of the "flagship" (i.e, more common) H&S products, this one is ridiculously cheap and fantastically priced.

1st steep - 212F and approximately 4 min : 1.5 t or 1 heaping teaspoon : 12oz water

I was a bit concerned at first because the box aroma has a strong syrupy cherry amaretto smell to it. But once brewed, this tea has a mellow but present good black tea smell, and maybe a little nutty towards the end. There was no trace of cherry anywhere in the brewed tea.

The flavor is thin immediately, but fades into lasting nuttiness and that old familiar tangy or restaurant oolong tea.
I'm very pleased with this tea for the price of it. It's what I would expect from a lower priced tea, and far outpaces Adagio's Formosa which just tasted like sucking on wet paper. That being said, Harney's Formosa is still a little lighter than I'd want my oolong to be at this steep. If I find anything different on the next steep, I'll make an edit to the review.
