Served in Rock City cafe in Rockland, Maine.
This was a very dark Assam with a fairly smoky character. Aroma is strong, malty and fruity, but it is the smoky notes that make this tea stand out. The aroma is interesting and complex, a little like drinking a fine wine.
Flavor is slightly harsh, bitter and with a lot of astringency as well, leaving a drying sensation on the palate. I find I get accustomed to these sensations though as I drink the cup, allowing me to focus on and appreciate the tea's wonderful aromatic complexity.
Not my favorite Assam, but a very interesting one and quite a pleasant surprise to find it served in a cafe that seems to focus more on coffee!
