This is an excellent tea. I am not normally a lapsang souchong enthusiast, but this one is quite compelling. Smokey, but not overpoweringly so. It's rich but mellow, with a natural sweetness. Hints of cinnamon. I have tried both the loose leaf and teabags and they are equally fine. Highly recommended.

As expected the aroma is similar to a pine forest on fire, or a freshly paved road. For those new to lapsing souchong, it might be a bit intimidating. Those who are adverse to trying because of the aroma are missing out on a wonderful cup of tea. The liquor is a deep amber color. The flavor is nice. Once brewed, the burnt pine aroma mellows. The flavor is smooth with a very subtle after taste. For me, this tea needs to be paired with food. On its' own it seems a bit powerful. I never use cream or sugar, but I think either would tame it enough for just a cup (or more) of tea.

I call Lapsang Souchong "campfire tea" and I love its smokey aroma. Sometimes smoke is all you taste, but not with this tea -- it has a lovely flavour behind the smoke. I don't usually buy tea on-line but this was worth the trouble.

Full disclosure: I'm not really qualified to review teas, but...
I switched from coffee to tea a while back. I graduated to loose leaf not long ago. The only loose tea I could find was Twinings English Breakfast, which I enjoyed. Cruising the internet looking for a new teapot I came across Mark T. Wendell, which was an eye opener. So I ordered a couple of teas, one of which was Hu-Kwa.
It's certainly different! A dark leaf and very smokey aroma, not like the Lipton, Twinings and Bigelow I was used to. I brewed according to the website directions, 5 minutes. It has a very clear medium red color. The taste was very smokey. It took a bit of getting used to, but the main impression I got was that under all the smoke was a very high quality tea. It doesn't seem to be a high caffeine tea.
Not exactly sure that this is my cup of tea, but I'm looking forward to drinking more of this.

lthough Mark T Wendell carries a considerable number of teas, Hu-Kwa is their signature tea. It is said to be "the finest obtainable Lapsang Souchong ... from Taiwan." And it is the finest.

The "Ne plus ultra" of Lapsang Souchongs. The high bar for all others. It is superb. Yes, it is smokey - that's what a LS is, but this has a sweet note to the aroma and that carries through into the tea, which is rich and smooth and mellow. It also keeps well. I have some I have had for 4 years and it is still wonderful. I buy some new every year, but I compare them and the 4 yr. old is holding its own. If you are going to do LS, do this one, otherwise, buy all the LS samples from Upton's and try them.
