Da Hong Pao Tea from Tea King of China (Starway)

Style: Da Hong Pao – Region: Fujian, China

Jul. 16th, 2018

The tea that I got is packaged in individual packets, each containing six grams (about three US tea bags worth) of relatively large, but broken pieces of tea leaf. It doesn't smell as strongly as most roasted oolongs, but it also doesn't smell overly roasted as inexpensive oolongs often do. Adding water brings out a bi...

I'll confess I tried this tea after being intrigued at reading the legend of the Big Red Robe. Glad I did. I wonder if a monkey really picked this?

This is my new favorite tea. It has more body and flavor than the more delicate oolong teas. I usually give it a bit more tea and a longer steep than the usual recommen...

This tea was good, but it just didn't wow me the way I would need a tea in this price range to do in order to want to buy it.

The dry leaf smells exquisite, multifaceted, and hard to describe. Although the color is dark, the smell resembles green teas in some ways. Softly toasty and bready, hinting at floral and s...

A truly great tea!
I brew this with one teaspoon of tea per cup(about 1.5 grams I think) And I get 3 steepings. The aroma is nice but indescribable, and the taste is almost the same way. It has nutty notes and is very... "minerally". A pretty good value at $17 per 100g but definitely not cheap either.

Red Robe Oolong from Simple Loose Leaf

Out of all the teas on this planet, oolong, in all its varieties, is my favorite. I received this particular type as part of the monthly deal from this company in a loose leaf form.

This oolong had a nice earthy smell that was slightly stronger compared to other oolongs I have had. Its flavor was smooth all the way ...

It's kind of strange that I've had so many Dan Cong oolongs in my life, but no oolong from Wuyishan. I guess that's because of my Chaozhou background. Given the fame of Dahongpao, I guess it's about time to try it out!

According to the vendor it's a 'banyan' type, meaning it's harvested near the scenic area of Wuyis...

Yet another tea from this company that I've been ordering lately. Originally, I received a free sample of their Big Red Robe along with a few gaiwans I ordered from them. Since then I've been buying this tea regularly.

As I understand it, this is one of the "house teas" that comes from the owner's tea farming vil...

Had this a couple of days ago. One of the best oolongs I have ever had. Slight to no astringency. Honey and floral notes with a slight buttery taste. Aroma was very much like a typical oolong with hints of burnt grass.

This tea smells really good, in fact I will go out on a limb and say this is the sweetest Da Hong Pao I have ever sniffed! There are strong notes of rich cocoa, hovering between dark and milk chocolate, toss in the notes of baking biscuits, moderate notes of slightly fruity pipe tobacco and autumn leaves, and finish of...

First off I can say that the dry leaves have a very rich aroma, a blend of char and sweet fruit, it reminds me of peaches and plums cooked over a grill and allowed to get that really yummy char and caramelized sugar aroma. There is also a distant aroma of orchids and a touch of tobacco, the finish has a slightly yeast...

Well this is my first ever Da Hong Pao, and I'm really excited to review it (but not as much as I was to taste it)!

I brewed about 1.5 spoons (because the leaves are long) in about 9 oz of water at 200 F for 4 min.

The color of the tea is beautiful reddish amber (Alex, I think a good feature would be uploading pi...

There are notes of coal, honey, orchids, a tiny touch of cocoa, and a finish of yeasty bread. I absolutely love teas that have a smokey or empyreumatic (if you want to impress your friends) aroma, to me they are one of the most comforting aromas you can get.

The first steep puts me in a happy place, it is one of the...

The aroma of this tea is a blend of sweetness and smoke. There are notes of baking bread, honey, tobacco, coal, and a finishing hint of cocoa. It is quite a fascinating aroma that is well balanced.

The first steep starts out sharply sweet, like honey coated tobacco with a strong note of coal. There is a great blend ...

Super. This tea is just excellent!

I like finding finer teas that do well with a Western-style brewing. I admit that I tend toward laziness, and there's just no time in the AM to pull out the gong fu set. While I expect that this tea would potentially be even more amazing brewed with short steeps, it was also won...

Dry leaf is aromatic, and consists of long, whole, slightly twisted leaves which unfurl quite slowly upon brewing.

There's a real explosion of aroma the minute the leaves touch water. The brewed cup is strongly aromatic, combining floral and honey-like tones that I normally only encounter in green Anxi oolongs like...

The dry leaf looks brown with greenish tinges and is quite aromatic. Greener-looking than any other Da Hong Pao I've seen before.

The instant I poured water over the leaf, there was a huge explosion of aroma...wow! I used a much shorter steeping than I normally would.

Subtle in flavor: little bitterness, but co...

To me this dry tea smelled like one of my favorite aromas - mac and cheese. The first infusion was a combination of a floral, with raisins and caramel, with a tiny hint of smoke. The second was more floral and sweeter, with more raisin in it.. As it cooled, it developed a certain fruitiness that reminded me of peache...
