Assam - Dikom Estate, GTGFOP1, Black Indian Tea from Simpson & Vail

Style: Assam – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India

84 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Nov. 18th, 2022

This was a smoother, higher-grade Assam that had a much lighter character than is typical for an Assam.

The dry leaf is pretty aesthetically pleasing, it actually looks much nicer than the picture S&V provided on their website: lots of tip, which looks more pale and less golden than some. Its aroma is rather fruity ...

I was excited and curious to order from TeaSource, and this was one of the first teas I tried. I have been impressed with all of the teas I've tried, including this one.

The leaf is strongly aromatic and pleasant, mostly a malty smell, and it also gives off the sense that this tea packs a punch.

The brewed cup is...

Somehow I let this sample that I bought slip through the cracks and only am trying it now. Unfortunately, it's no longer for sale. A shame, because I thought it outstanding!

The dry leaf is quite beautiful, short, curly leaves with lots of golden tips, and has a complex and fascinating fragrance, sort of fruity, a r...

Disha Assam Summer Organic Factory Black from TEAORB

Style: Assam – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India

84 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 9th, 2017

A relatively smooth black tea that I thought tasted better when brewed more strongly. One of the many samples TEAORB sent me, thank you!

Dry leaf, dark in appearance, slightly broken, with a gently curved shape, smells mild, pleasant but uninteresting: fruity and a little bit dusty.

The brewed cup smells sweet, ...

This is a prototypical high-grade Assam. Really good and exactly what I expect out of an Assam. Strong and deep, but easy to drink and enjoyable through every sip. Contrasting with TEAORB's other samples, which have been exotic and unpredictable at times, this is a more traditional tea that I think a wide range of p...

Esta Assam Spring Organic Artisanal Green from TEAORB

Style: Assam Green – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India

When TEAORB sent me a massive array of Assam green teas to sample, I was a little worried that they would all taste too similar to each other, especially given how they all seem to look very similar to each other. Many of the Assam greens I've tried have been bold, alien, and the sort of tea I would need to be in the ...

Gomvir Assam Spring Natural Artisanal Green from TEAORB

Style: Assam Green – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India

68 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 26th, 2017

My least favorite of the Assam green teas so far; still pleasant to drink but only if brewed carefully; has some nice aromatic complexity, but I found the aroma was fleeting, most evident right after I poured the water and not persisting as I drank the whole cup. It was also very easy to oversteep.

The dry leaf has...

Oct. 20th, 2017

This tea stood out among the first several Assam green teas I sampled from TEAORB. I haven't tried the whole batch yet, not even half of it, but this is definitely my favorite so far.

The dry leaf is by far the most fragrant of the Assam greens I've tried. The smell is similar to the other teas: smoky, vegetal, an...

81 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 14th, 2017

This tea tasted a lot like an un-aged sheng pu-erh, but a softer one suitable for immediate consumption. This was my second tea sampled in my adventure into Assam green teas, thanks to the abundant small samples TEAORB sent me.

Dark, crinkly leaf smells heavy, but there's a faint light note suggesting sweetness, an...

Mankota Exotic Assam Black Tea Second Flush from Golden Tips

Style: Assam – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India

88 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 17th, 2015

An earthy, complex tea whose true colors only seem to come out if brewed strongly.

The leaf of this is well-formed, but mostly dark (darker than suggested by the picture), and it has a strong and deep aroma, like a classic or typical Assam but with more complexity, more earthy and vegetal.

Produces a cup with a p...

Halmari Gold Assam Black Tea Second Flush (Clonal) from Golden Tips

Style: Assam – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India

91 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 3rd, 2015

Golden Tips describes this on their website as a pretty exceptional tea, and I think it fully lived up to the description.

The dry leaf, beautifully curled and full of bright orange tip, is the most aromatic of any Assam I've encountered, with an intensely malty aroma, suggesting rye malt, and spicy as well.

May. 8th, 2014

The last of four rather old samples that were given to me as a gift by a friend. This one seemed to have lost a bit more of its aroma than the others did.

The dry leaf is beautiful, although slightly more broken than the others (the picture shows this quite accurately) and with a slightly lower portion of golden ti...

Jun. 14th, 2011

This is a whole-leaf tea but I was less impressed with it relative to other broken-leaf teas I have tried lately.

Brewed as instructed, this is a strong Assam with a classic flavor profile, malty, tannic, slightly savory. I find Upton's description made me expect a smoother tea than this is.

Some Assams have the...
