Mutan White from Harney and Sons

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fu'an, Fujian, China

84 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 20th, 2017

I thought this was an above-average white peony or bai mu dan.

Dry leaf smells different from any other White Peony tea I've tried, notes of candied citrus peel, a sort of bittersweet smell, a slight pungency, almost hinting at camphor. I'm intrigued, and eager to try this to see what kind of cup this leaf produces...

Frontier Organic White Peony from Frontier

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: ?????

Jan. 17th, 2017

I was not impressed with this one. I'm not sure if it was the low quality of tea though, or if it was simply not very fresh at the store where it was sold. I wish Frontier had more of a mechanism in place for ensuring freshness in the bulk tea kiosks they have in natural food stores, because I sometimes have a proble...

Fuding White Tea Cake from Upton Tea Imports

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fuding, Fujian, China

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 9th, 2017

I tried this together with Upton's ZW42. I actually liked this one a lot, and not the other.

Brews up a dark, full-bodied cup that, like the other compressed white tea cake, is rather bitter. I find the bitterness more blunt though, whereas ZW42 has a sharp bitterness.

The aroma is strange and hard to describe....

White Peony from Simply Good Tea

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: China

33 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 1/5
Dec. 7th, 2015

This is a late review that I somehow forgot to post; the company is now closed, and the tea wasn't my favorite, but why not share?

Another dud, the second one in a batch of teas that I've otherwise thought offered solid quality and excellent value.

The dry leaf looks unusually wiry for a white peony or bai mu dan...

White Peony from Octavia Tea

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fujian, China

Excellent! Another sample served at Velvet Sky Bakery.

The leaf was rather broken, but this may have been due to being packed in the small sample container: this is a very fragile, large-leafed tea.

Brews up a clear, light-colored cup that is on the delicate side for a white peony. Aroma is floral, with notes o...

White Peony Tea (Bai MuDan) from TeaVivre

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fuding, Fujian, China

90 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Aug. 12th, 2014

A top-notch white peony tea that I found a bit tricky to brew: aromatically complex, but easy to oversteep. If considering the aroma alone, this would be among my favorite white teas ever, but the experience of drinking it was slightly less than top-notch, I'd say only solidly good, not excellent.

The dry leaf is i...

Premium Peony White Tea (100% Organic) from Prince of Peace

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fujian, China

53 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 30th, 2013

A pleasant, full-bodied tea, but aromatically weak and not very interesting. Not as aromatic as Ten Ren's white tea, which remains my favorite white tea from a tea bag. Smells very mild, mostly of caramel, very faintly floral.

Flavor is subdued: not very bitter. Just the right amount of astringency: smooth, even ...

This may be tied with TeaVivre for my favorite white peony--yet the two teas are like day and night. TeaVivre's is so light, and I found this to be rich, full-bodied, and dark. Pleasing and unusually strong for a white tea.

Broken leaf has a highly heterogeneous appearance, with small whole leaves, large broken pi...

Organic White Tea from Lotus Leaf Tea

I normally like white peony tea more than silver needle because it is richer and darker. Judging by the appearance of the leaf, I would expect this tea to be lighter in color and flavor.

But I found this tea to be very dark and rich in flavor when brewed. Aroma is strongly fruity, a characteristic I don't usually ...

A top-notch white tea for a very low price: $30 a pound for a white tea that is organic certified and is among the better examples of this style of tea that I've sampled.

I found this tea was on the light side for pai mu tan or white peony tea, both by color and flavor, but it was still pleasant and flavorful.

93 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Feb. 25th, 2013

The most aromatic white peony I've sampled yet.

Dry leaf looks much lighter and with more downy tips than usual for this type of tea. Aroma of the dry leaf is intensely floral and delicate, with melon-like tones that I normally only encounter in silver needle.

When brewed as recommended, there is only a hint of ...

Not what I expected, and actually, far exceeding any expectations I had! This is my favorite Pai Mu Tan sampled yet, and is far out ahead of any of the other contenders.

I had this as a sample in a tea sachet. The sachet contains the same tea that is sold as loose-leaf. I will note that the sachet was very large,...

Produces an amber brew with a light, floral aroma, and underlying tones of caramel and autumn leaves. There's also a noticeable fishy quality to the aroma, however, which I find unpleasant. Flavor is surprisingly metallic, although not necessarily in a bad way. Clear, clean, a bit crisp.

I recommend a longer stee...

A darker white tea. This doesn't even resemble ZW56, Upton's other organic Pai Mu Tan offering. Much darker; if you just gave it to me I'd probably guess incorrectly that it was a Shou Mei.

Aroma is mostly of autumn leaves, with only a hint of peony and a faint suggestion of some other vegetal tones. Also, unusua...

This particular pai mu tan smells more like an actual peony than any others I've tried.. The aroma is actually fairly powerful, although when you sip the cup it is a bit bland...this tea doesn't have much flavor. There is a very mild, unpleasant sourness to this tea too. Smooth, but I don't notice any sweetness at a...

Nov. 28th, 2009

A rich, full-bodied tea, brews a dark orange color and is fairly bitter. The aroma is fairly complex. There are some pleasant vegetal tones too. Pleasant aftertaste too.

I really like this tea; it's one of the few white peony teas that I've tried that has been bold and full-bodied enough for me. It's almost a li...

Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Zhenghe, Fujian, China

33 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 3/5
Aug. 29th, 2009

A disappointment, especially compared to Rishi's other offerings. The brewed tea is amber in color. The aroma is bold and peppery without being sharp; it almost suggests celery, but without the fresh vegetal notes most white teas have. There's not much bitterness, but there's a fair amount of sourness. This tea is ...
