Hojicha from Harney and Sons
Style: Hojicha – Region: Kyoto, Japan89 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

An excellent roasted twig tea, crisp flavor and complex aroma! Probably my favorite roasted twig tea (i.e. not roasted leaf tea) that I have ever had.
I tend to always like hojicha, but this was one of the more interesting batches I've tried in a while.
This one is a roasted kukicha (twig tea) and the roast look...
Hojicha Dark Roast from Octavia Tea
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5

An unusually smooth hojicha, not the strongest aroma, I thought on the weak side.
The dry leaf (which is a mix of stem and leaf) looks fairly roasted, but the aroma only has a light amount of roast. Instead, there are some interesting fruity notes, as well as some of the vegetal and grain-like qualities I associate...
Hojicha from Adagio Teas
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5

Thanks E. Alex Gerster for this sample! The leaf looks dark in color, but smells greener or lighter-roasted.
Brews up a dark amber color, lighter than I expected, with a greener character. Flavor is crisp, with a little bitterness or bite. There's only a light roast evident in the aroma when drinking, and there a...
Houjicha Roasted Green Tea from Wegmans
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5

A surprisingly good-quality, but expensive hojicha with a light roast, woody aroma, and a sweet flavor.
Dry leaf has a lighter color and a "greener" character to the aroma...only a light roast, and moderate woody aroma, tones of malt or grain, and even a hint of the grassiness characteristic of sencha and other unro...
Hoji-cha, Roasted Green Tea (Loose) from Yamamotoyama
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

This is a solid loose-leaf hojicha that would be my go-to brand for the dark roast stuff, if it weren't so hard to get my hands on it.
Pretty heavy roast for a hojicha. A good mix of stem and large leaves...brews a very dark color with a strongly roasty aroma...woody/twiggy but without being at all smoky. There's ...
Houjicha Green Tea from Arbor Teas
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

A twiggy hojicha with a lot of large leaves and quite a lot of stem. Looks like roasted bancha with perhaps a bit of kukicha in the mix (more twig than typical for bancha). Looks very dark in color, but the aroma is not quite as overwhelmingly roasty as some of the dark-roast hojicha I've tried.
Brews a very dark ...
Kukicha from Eden Organic
Style: Hojicha – Region: ?????70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

I tried this one in the dining hall at Haverford college; yay.
This is a roasted kukicha, making it both hojicha and kukicha, and I think it's dark roasted enough that it is more like typical hojicha than typical (green) kukicha or twig tea. It also contains quite a lot of leaf, not just twig, again making it more ...
Houjicha Tea from Mountain Rose Herbs
Style: Hojicha – Region: China93 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

A nutty and fruity hojicha, subtly aromatic. This is my favorite example of this type of tea yet...which surprises me because it's from China.
The dry leaf looks dark and has a fairly strong roasted aroma, but there's not much roastiness in the aroma of the brewed cup. Instead, I sense mostly nutty and fruity qual...
ZG44: Organic China Houjicha from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Hojicha – Region: China87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 6th, 2012
I normally think of Chinese versions of Japanese styles of tea as imitations, lower in price and quality than their "original" counterparts. But I liked this one very much, in fact, much more than the considerably pricier TJ41 (which Upton has since discontinued), and TJ40. It immediately became my new favorite hojic...

Very creamy for this style. Compared to other roasted kukicha (kukicha+hojicha), this has a richer, more full-bodied character, but a milder roast. Aroma has tones of vanilla. Much more oolong-like than any other hojicha I have tried.

Noticeably different from TJ40...more heavily roasted (tending toward the dark side among all hojicha's I've tried)...very dark brown cup. The aroma is not overwhelmingly roasty, however...there are still a few of the fresh green tea tones present.
Flavor is sour...which I don't like, although there's also a hint o...
Japanese Ku-Ki Ho-Ji Cha (Roasted Ku-Ki Cha) from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 23rd, 2010
Aroma powerful and enticing like a dark roast coffee. This tea foams when brewed, and the brewed cup is clearer and lighter in color than you'd expect from the aroma and dark color of the twigs. Unlike some kukicha, this tea seems to be made exclusively out of twigs with not even a bit of leaf.
Surprisingly, relat...
Roasted Tea Hoji-cha (16 ct.) from Yamamotoyama
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan63 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

These teabags are strong, with a generous quantity of leaf. The roast is noticeable but light, and this hojicha has a fresh, crisp quality, more like green tea. It's not terribly complex, but overall, I think this is a very good tea that offers outstanding value, especially among teabags.
These teabags are versati...
Organic Hojicha from Traditional Medicinals
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan57 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5

On the heavily roasted and dark side, more coffee-like in aroma and fewer of the green tea qualities come through. Good, but not terribly complex.
There also isn't the most generous quantity of leaf in the teabag. The company recommends 8 oz. of water per teabag, and a long infusion. I brewed it this way and it w...
Japanese Ho-ji Cha from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

A rich roasted aroma, fairly mellow flavor, with only a little bitterness. Exactly what I would expect of this style. Some hints of the freshness of green tea remain. Moderate level of roast. A few mildly objectionable tones in the aroma...hard to describe...like a slight stale quality (even though overall the tea ...

This is without a doubt my favorite tea from mighty leaf and one of my favorite hojicha's that I've tried--definitely my favorite that's available bagged.
The aroma is rich and roasty and has some nuances. There's a bit more bitterness than some hojicha's, which I like, but there is little astringency or sourness; ...
