Sencha Yabukita Organic from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Green Tea – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 22nd, 2020

This sencha does not taste or smell like anything else that I can think of. It is complex and nutty, with some broth, toasted rice, and lychee in the flavor and aroma. It is mostly lacking the sharp, capsicum/grass flavor common to inexpensive green teas. It is not a bargain, but I think it is a worthwhile purchase ...

Saemidori Sen-cha Fukamushi (2020) from Maeda-en

Style: Green Tea – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

85 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 7th, 2020

I was surprised at how good this was. I took a chance because Maeda-en really has terribly short descriptions of their teas on their site. I really didn't know what I'd get. The tea, in terms of the type of leaves, length of them, scent, and color, actually reminded me more of Shin-cha than other Fukamushi. The leaves ...

Picture of Organic Gyokuro Yamashiro

Organic Gyokuro Yamashiro from DAVIDsTEA

Style: Gyokuro – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

30 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Jan. 21st, 2020

Looks and smells like a proper gyokuro but completely misses on flavor. Very hard to steep, needs a low temp and short time to avoid turning it into an astringent bitter mess. Does not re-steep at all, one and done. Some of the vegetal taste of a gyokuro but like an artificial version, not balanced or rich.

Organic Gyokuro Yamashiro from DAVIDsTEA

Style: Gyokuro – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

30 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 1/5
Oct. 20th, 2018

I'd really like to say something positive about this tea, but it's really just not good. I gave it several chances. I brewed it first using the method that worked reliably with the Maeda-en gyokuro, but it was bitter and made me extremely jittery. I tried converting the annoying, proprietary "perfect spoonful" measurem...

Kagoshima (Kagoshima Sencha) from Harney and Sons

Style: Sencha – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 9th, 2017

I usually think of tea as being more about the aroma than the flavor, but this tea was intensely flavorful, and I thought its flavor was what made it most interesting and enjoyable.

This tea was very similar overall to the Organic Sencha also sold by Harney & Sons. The main difference I noticed initially was that t...

Matcha Super Green Tea Bag, Organic from Rishi Tea

Style: Green Tea – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 30th, 2015

Very pleased with this tea. It comes with an oversized wrapper that makes for a good place to set the bag between steeps. Within you'll find a reasonable roomy satchet full of choppy bits of flavorful sencha along with a modest sprinkling of matcha.

I like it. It's not the most complex sencha I've had, but it has a...

Sencha Kagoshima from Octavia Tea

Style: Sencha – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 21st, 2014

This sencha has large pieces of intact leaf, and looks and smells like a very typical sencha.

Brews up a yellow-green cup, so vibrant in color that it looks almost like it is glowing.

The aroma is spinachy and seaweedy, and the flavor is strongly umami, slightly sweet, and slightly bitter. There's a hint of corn...

Sencha from Rishi Tea

Style: Sencha – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 9th, 2011

Among the cloudiest / most opaque sencha's I've seen...bright green in color, even in the second infusion.

Aroma and flavor are actually very similar to kukicha...less of the seaweedy or ocean-like qualities, fairly grassy, and almost twiggy. Also somewhat matcha-like.

This was an interesting change of pace...qu...

2010 harvest

nice, predominantly grassy aroma. somewhat vegetal. i find it to be lacking in 'deep umami flavor.'

[2nd] 160degF, 6oz water, 30sec
a pleasant bitterness coming out

the 4th infusion was so-so, but i got tired of drinking. perhaps i used too much leaf heh

Bancha from Rishi Tea

Style: Bancha – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

81 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Oct. 30th, 2010

I found this tea to be very different based on how it is brewed.

The light, flat quality of the dry leaf reminds me of dragon well, but the similarity ends there. This tea brews a very clear greenish-yellow color. Regardless of how strongly you brew it, it comes out completely transparent: there's almost no opacit...

A friend who knows the owners of Rishi brewed a cup of this then gave me a sample to take home. I brewed some for friends who normally will only drink Oolong -- they loved it too.

Megami Sencha from ITO EN

Style: Sencha – Region: Kagoshima, Japan

100 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

Excellent, concentrated, grassy but not Spinach-ey, altogether stimulating and simultaneously soothing drink. Like drinking green amber.
Not a wuss tea; highly recommended.
