Dimbula BOP from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Matale, Sri Lanka (Dimbula)

65 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Aug. 26th, 2024

This inexpensive Ceylon offers little to get excited over, for better or worse. It is a fairly standard tea, with some light, woody tannins and a dash of caramel flavor. I noticed that it tasted best at a lukewarm temperature; it is pretty bland when hot. It is good with lemon and sugar, and would probably be fine o...

Beautiful Mind from Shanti Tea

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: ?????

75 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 22nd, 2024

This is a tisane crafted from a few herbs that supposedly provide a cognitive boost: gotu kola, gingko biloba, and ashwagandha, along with some other herbs that presumable add some flavor, like sage and lemon verbena. It also contains peppermint and rosemary, which some believe have healing or stimulating properties. ...

Raspberry Earl Grey from Shanti Tea

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: ?????

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 3rd, 2024

I tried this both hot and iced, and while it is fine hot, it is meant to be served in the summer on ice (with sugar or honey of course, and a squeeze of lemon is good to have as well). It is mostly organic, with only the "natural essences" being not organic. The aroma is floral and fruity, and the flavor emphasizes t...

Caramel Latte from Shanti Tea

Style: Flavored Tea – Region: ?????

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jul. 31st, 2024

This is a surprising tea. I never saw one of these before, and until now, I thought only lunatics would attempt to mix tea with coffee. It is a blend of black tea, a few coffee beans, sunflowers, and natural caramel flavoring. I was pleasantly surprised at the rich flavor (when made with milk and sugar of course). T...

Crimson Elixir from Shanti Tea

Style: Flavored Tea – Region: ?????

85 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Jul. 24th, 2024

This is a very unusual tea - I am a little unsure how I feel about it, so I may amend this review later. It is made with hibiscus, elderberries, and beet root and, strangely enough, they recommend steeping for just 2 minutes. I am guessing that is to prevent the tart hibiscus from stepping in and dominating the flavor...

Kama Sutra Chai from Shanti Tea

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: India

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Jul. 24th, 2024

This makes a very sweet, floral chai, which is not surprising, since it contains 3 kinds of flowers, in addition to cinnamon and other spices. The flavor is a little extravagant, but nice. I see that my review is very different from Alex's - maybe the formula has changed, or perhaps our taste buds are different.

Thurbo Estate Second Flush FTGFOP1 Darjeeling from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Darjeeling Second Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India

45 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 18th, 2024

This is a very mild, bland tea. Lemon and sugar overwhelms it, but it is decent on its own or with a splash of milk - then it is pleasant and bready, with some mild tannins coming in to the mouthfeel. Priced too high given the quality, imo.

60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5

There is not much flavor here, but there are no unpleasant flavors or aromas either. I have certainly had stronger gunpowder teas, but this one is very easy to drink, and offered at a low price.

Tropical Black Tea from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: ?????

85 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
May. 28th, 2024

I was very pleasantly surprised by this. I just finished disrespecting another fruit flavored tea from Upton, so I was not expecting much, but this is, as advertised, very fruity and tropical. It is made with sunflower, papaya, maracuja, and pineapple (both natural bits and in the form of flavoring). The aroma is qu...

Mango Indica Black Tea from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: ?????

40 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
May. 23rd, 2024

With a name like mango indica, I don't know if I am supposed to smoke this or drink it (lol). The aroma is nice, strong, and fruity, so I give them credit for that. But the flavor is dominated by - surprise, surprise - Lifesavers candy-type artificial fruit flavor. When will I learn? It is time for me to stop purcha...

Idulgashinna Estate Organic BOP from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Sri Lanka / Ceylon

65 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
May. 23rd, 2024

This is pretty robust for a Ceylon tea, with some tannin bite and a woody aroma. It was quite a bit better with milk than with lemon and sugar, which surprised me. With just a little vegan milk added, it makes a very good breakfast style tea. My intention in buying this was to mix it with a Darjeeling for iced tea (...

No. 1 Tippy Orthodox GFOP Darjeeling from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

75 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
May. 21st, 2024

I decided to try something different. Instead of getting Upton's iced tea blend (which I like a lot) that is made from Ceylons and Darjeelings, why not get some Ceylons and Darjeelings and mix them together? This way I can also get to know the individual teas. This one did not let me down. It is on the mild side, b...

Rote Grütze (Red Groats) from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Fruit (Herbal) Tea – Region: Germany

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
May. 21st, 2024

This is a fruit tisane, nothing groaty about it. It is pretty tangy in the nostrils. The flavor is hibiscus mixed with blueberry and strawberry. It turns out that this is made of hibiscus, grapes, elderberries, blueberries, and flavoring. An enjoyable fruit tisane that would be probably be nice on ice.

Culinary Teas Earl Grey from Culinary Teas

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: ?????

65 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 29th, 2024

This is a pleasant EG, but very much on the lighter side. There is not a lot of bergamot flavor, and the tea is a little thin - but it makes a perfectly enjoyable cup. I would recommend this to someone who likes a mild Earl Grey.

Lavender Earl Grey from Culinary Teas

75 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 20th, 2024

This has a little lavender flavor plus a lot in the potpourri-like aroma, and there is plenty of bergamot too. With lemon or lime and sugar, it has a candied orange peel flavor. I preferred it with milk and sugar, which is a little more subtle. A good change of pace from the usual Earl Grey.

German Gingerbread from Culinary Teas

Jan. 15th, 2024

This was my least favorite of the 3 holiday-spice-cookie teas that I got from Culinary. It tastes somewhat like gingerbread, but it could use some more sweetness and spice. I had it with almond milk, and it is possible that had a negative effect on the taste.

Christmas Cookie Tea from Culinary Teas

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: ?????

Jan. 12th, 2024

Served with milk and sugar, this really tastes just like a Christmas cookie (i.e. a sugar cookie with sprinkles). This is a very successful attempt at duplicating/translating a flavor from a baked item to a tea. It is made with calendula, jasmine, cinnamon, and cocoa, but mostly I taste buttery vanilla cookies (with ...

Baroness Grey from Culinary Teas

70 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 11th, 2024

I will always give a flavored Earl Grey a try; sometimes they are very impressive, sometimes not. It is interesting to see how the teamakers alter the EG formula - I have had them with lavender, chocolate, rose, and vanilla, maybe others too. This Baroness adds lemon, cornflower, and rose along with the bergamot (and...

Holiday Winter Tea from Culinary Teas

Jan. 10th, 2024

I am trying out a new tea provider that I saw here on RateTea - Culinary, and so far I am happy with them. I like that they sell tea by the ounce, so that a customer can purchase as much as he likes. This is a well-balanced, holiday spiced tea, with cinnamon, clove, and orange. I didn't taste much of the blackberry ...

This is a smooth, mild tea - but not lacking in flavor. It seems similar to a good quality Darjeeling or a Ceylon. A little overpriced imo, but good.

This seems like it was named for the ski resort in the French alps, and I could see brewing a pot of this after a day on the ski slopes. I have had if in the past and liked it, but this batch I am rating in 2023 is not up to their standard imo. The flavors seem weak and the overall experience is a little watery. It i...

I was not expecting much, since I had tried another Colombian tea from Upton that was not good at all, but this was a pleasant surprise. The flavor is complex and plays around on the palate, with notes of fresh bread and malty tannins. The price is right too - I would get this again. I had this breakfast tea style, ...

This has a lot of woodsmoke/cigar tobacco in the aroma and the flavor. There is a something else in there too, some woody and savory notes, enough so that I began to wonder if I was drinking some kind of sausage beverage and not a tea (lol). But this black dragon is all about the smoke, which is something that I enjoy...

This is a light and easy Darjeeling which tastes fine, but is a little lacking in body and flavor. It blends well with milk or lemon. The lightly sweet, earthy aroma of the tea leaves is its best point. Despite the impressive name, this is a pretty ordinary tea, and sells for an average price.

Kensington Breakfast Blend from Upton Tea Imports

I am very happy with this so far. Upton has a number of good, reasonably priced breakfast blends, and this is one of them--so far, I have very positive feelings about it. The aroma is fresh and sweet, and reminds me of pipe tobacco. It is a medium-bodied blend, with a nutty, bready flavor. It is pretty smooth overa...
