Earl Grey from Benner Tea Co

Benner Earl Grey (from ALDI food stores) came across much the opposite to me, on first try, as to the other reviewer: weak on bergamot and OK on tea. In fact, when opening the paper wrapper for each bag and taking a good sniff, I hardly could detect the bergamot, but the tea was obvious in the dry aroma. The bergamo...

Found this at an Armenian market, $14 for 500 grams. The leaf is very dark. The brewed tea is a dark amber color. It has a slight bitterness, but to me tastes as most regular Earl Grey teas.

This is one of those uncommon tea blends that smells and tastes exactly as advertised—no hidden "flavours" (as it's spelled where sold), no surprises, no Trojan horses. That's a good thing, if you like a smoky rose tea with some fruity elements. Murchie's describes this as, "Evoking the atmosphere of a Victorian si...

Feb. 24th, 2024

Given how much of a waste of time and steeping water Whittard's standard Earl Grey was, expectations for this version ran low. What a pleasant surprise instead!

Not only did this tea actually have a detectable and pleasant aroma upon opening the wrapper and sniffing the dry bag, that carried over quite strongly i...

Two background caveats here:
1. I'm not a big fan of overt rose scent in beverages; something about drinking common garden flowers that I've cultivated, like rose, marigold or lavender, still seems weird to me (even though I do like jasmine tea...go figure!).
2. I haven't had rose congou tea from China yet, for com...

This tea came from a Middle Eastern eatery, and I took home an extra bag to try on home well water (instead of our heavily chlorinated city stuff that gets fishy this time of year when the lake turns over). Turns out not all the "fishy" element was from the water!

Here's the second Earl Grey tea in a row I've rev...

For those who enjoy both coconut and almond, this seasonal tea should be heavenly. Sweetened enough, it's like marzipan candy in a teacup. I'm not a big fan of nuts in general, with almond probably being the one I can tolerate best, so the tea likely rates lower for me than it could otherwise. Still, the good news f...

Once again, "value" per amount of product hurts a Republic of Tea tea. I got this as a roughly 1/4-cup free sample near the front of a World Market. Free is great, free is fun! I saw the shelf price, and had to run.

Paying $12 per 50-count cylindrical can isn't fun, nor about $8–10 at chain grocery stores tha...

I strongly encourage readers to try this if they like extra-flavored Earl Greys. However, hardcore Earl Grey purists like my wife likely will offer a derisive, somewhat disgusted pout upon sniffing or tasting this product. Basis for my guess: she did. :-) I love it, so...high rating!

Sep. 15th, 2023

As explained below, my score may be a bit unrepresentative on the low end, but only out of honesty on why. The quality of this product stands out, and it's one of the strongest flavored black teas I've had out of a bag. The base Kenyan tea, with finely chopped leaves, turns dark quickly and releases a somewhat bitter...

Murchie's has a large repertoire of teas; most last, some don't. This one has been around since at least the mid 2000s, when we started ordering from them, so it must have built a following. I finally decided to order it at the behest of my wife, who likes all things apricot. It doesn't disappoint.

The aroma and...

The aroma of this is quite nice, and the vanilla flavor is quite mild - a little too mild, imo. This makes for a pleasant, smooth cuppa, but I was hoping for a little more intensity. The price is a little on the high side. I will drink this up, but I probably won't order it again. P.S. this tea goes surprisingly we...

Another "conference tea" here...I had a couple bags there, and brought another home to steep in boiling well water. Water quality at the meeting was good, so my impressions were consistent in both places.

The best part of this tea was its dry-bag smell: potent, high-quality bergamot, but still not too much to ove...

This is quite a tasty and well-conceived blend, novel yet nice in both aroma and flavor, holding its own in those departments with any herbal/black bagged combination out there. However, I wish it were stronger, more befitting its name.
The rectangular, stringless tea bags are small, about half the volume of Celest...

This is the second loose-leaf Earl Grey I've had from Murchie's, and an outstanding example of the type, especially for someone like me who likes a bold, assertive tea. It is made from Assam, Keemun and Yunnan, and you bet the Assam asserts itself boldly in all phases of taste and aroma. Upon opening the bag, the dry...

Here's another in Celestial's fairly recent run of new black-tea blends. For a mass-marketed brand commonly available in retail stores, this rendition holds its own, but better quality can be had.

The dry aroma (especially when opening the sack or pouch in which the bags are packaged) may be the best part. This is...

It smells ok because of the lavender, however for me it kind of reminds me of soap which I understand there can be cultural differences with this. Not everyone would associate that with soap. The thing that ruins this tea though is the taste. It’s not that interesting and it’s actually quite bitter. It’s just not...

Benner English Breakfast is ALDI's regular "premium" offering. This Earl Grey is a periodic special.

The tea bags are packaged in individual cellophane pouches. The dry tea looks like CTC granules that have been further crumbled. It has a nice bergamot aroma.

The brewing tea smells of bergamot, but there's little...

The loose tea is a rather broken black tea blend with visible bits of citrus peel and blue cornflower petals. It smells strongly like fresh oranges, but the tea aroma is quite faint. Adding hot water brings out a malty aroma from the tea, but the citrus still predominates.

The bulk of the flavor is citrus. The blend...

May. 17th, 2022

Republic teas usually are on the costly side; however, I grabbed this one on sale at a Dallas Whole Foods. "Value" is based on the normal prices for other Republic teas (retailing upwards of 8-10 bucks for 50-pouch columnar steel tins), and how this tea doesn't pack the punch it should for reputably strong flavors of ...

Here's another case of a tea with multiple marketing personalities across target audiences. RateTea states this product is retired/discontinued, and perhaps it is in the U.S. However, it's still available on amazon.com with an "imported" label, as of this writing (for nearly $12 per 20-ct box!). I'm a sucker for rich, strong, flavored black teas, and two of my very favorite flavors are peppermint and vanilla. This seasonal tea combines all three, into one of the best flavored loose-leaf blends I've ever had. The product releases a very creamy, minty aroma on opening the dry sack, which I could stand there an...
