Hojicha from Harney and Sons

I love teas with a toasted flavor like this. This tea is certainly a great example of a good hojicha. This tea is sweet and thick bodied, slightly astringent in a good way, and of course has that wonderful toasted flavor. The aroma is very nice and also has the toasted smell. This tea is yet another old tea I'm reviewi...

I was very impressed by this tea. The only other hoji-cha I've tried was from YamaMotoYama, and I enjoyed it. But, this had a more toasty, well-rounded scent to it. The leaves differed more in their shape and appearance, which made it look more natural. The tea also had a more nuanced flavor.
It wasn't that expensi...

This is a very nice hojicha. It is pleasantly roasty, but there is some complexity (dashes of soy sauce and caramel) and the underlying bancha comes thru well. The aroma is woody and fresh.

An excellent roasted twig tea, crisp flavor and complex aroma! Probably my favorite roasted twig tea (i.e. not roasted leaf tea) that I have ever had.
I tend to always like hojicha, but this was one of the more interesting batches I've tried in a while.
This one is a roasted kukicha (twig tea) and the roast look...

This is a very special tea. Its aroma and flavor transport you to magical places. I love this tea.

This was surprisingly good. The flavor had a nice soothing aroma and taste in a "ah, this is the kind of food adults like" sort of way. It strikes me as a particularly good tea for certain brisk days.
The fact that I like it and that I got a decent size bag of loose leaf for about two and a half dollars makes it one...

I really liked the roasted, woody taste of this. Not overwhelming, though. It's not very sweet, but has absolutely no bitterness. A little bit savory. Very satisfying in general.

The aroma of this tea is fairly mild, on the lightly toasted spectrum of Houjicha, blending a faint sweetness with autumn leaves and a touch of loam. Towards the finish there is a blend of nutty and toasted seaweed, giving it a savory, umami finish.
The taste starts a touch smoky and very umami, with strong toasted ...

So, does it smell toasty? Yes, yes it does, it is like a campfire with notes of marshmallow, toasted bread, toasted corn, loam, and a slight umami note from the toasted rice. Yes, it is rather fascinating, the black rice is not as sweet as the rice you get in the usual genmaicha, it has a savory note more similar to B...

An unusually smooth hojicha, not the strongest aroma, I thought on the weak side.
The dry leaf (which is a mix of stem and leaf) looks fairly roasted, but the aroma only has a light amount of roast. Instead, there are some interesting fruity notes, as well as some of the vegetal and grain-like qualities I associate...
Houjicha Amber Roast from Obubu Tea
Style: Hojicha – Region: Kyoto, Japan87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

The aroma of this Houjicha is fun, it starts off as sweet roasted marshmallows and a touch of campfire, it then transitions to toasted sesame, burnt grass, and lastly a tiny wisp of distant sea air. I very much so had a vision pop into my mind of roasted marshmallows on a beach, the fire made from driftwood and sea gra...

The same things that I said about ITO-EN's hojicha apply to this brand--except for the fact that I enjoy this one just a bit better. I find there to be a bit more strength in this version, and I'm a person that seeks out strong tea.
This product listing is slightly inaccurate, however; this is not a loose tea. I do...

Thanks E. Alex Gerster for this sample! The leaf looks dark in color, but smells greener or lighter-roasted.
Brews up a dark amber color, lighter than I expected, with a greener character. Flavor is crisp, with a little bitterness or bite. There's only a light roast evident in the aroma when drinking, and there a...

The toasted rice flavor is quite strong. Some sips it didn't do much for me, other sips the smoky flavor felt like something I could get used to. I'll be more sure once I've tried a couple more of the bags.

The aroma is a blend of cedar, smoke, roasted tea, and autumn leaves. Brewing the leaves brings out rich earthy notes along with the smoke and cedar. The liquid sans leaves is sweet like fresh hay and roasted nuts.
The taste richly roasted and faintly smoked that fades to a sweet aftertaste. This tea tastes like au...

Thanks again Alex Z. For the sample of this hojicha! It was a really nice switch from some of the darker/deeper roasted teas of this variety that I had tried recently.
Very good quality tea as can be seen in the dry leaves, and tasted right from the start. The flavors of sweet grass and grain enhance the lightly roa...

The aroma of this tea is very strong, almost too strong! I made the mistake of sticking my face into the package and got overwhelmed! Once I sniffed the tea at a farther distance the aroma is still mostly strongly roasted hojicha, no other nuanced notes float through. Once it is brewed however it takes on notes of swee...

Having sampled a number of roasts of Obubu Hojicha, I can definitely say this is my favorite. Sweet, smooth and very soothing. An earthy cup where the smokey flavor does not overwhelm the tea's natural flavor.

A surprisingly good-quality, but expensive hojicha with a light roast, woody aroma, and a sweet flavor.
Dry leaf has a lighter color and a "greener" character to the aroma...only a light roast, and moderate woody aroma, tones of malt or grain, and even a hint of the grassiness characteristic of sencha and other unro...

This tea manages to embody everything wonderful about autumn, meaning it smells very smoky and richly roasted. Very clean and very earthy!
The flavor is intensely complex! Very rich and resinous with smoky notes and a sweet aftertaste. Delicious!

Toasty, nutty, earthy and light roasted flavor. I enjoy this warm brewed most of the year, and iced in the summer. Adagio teas have consistently good quality that are great for everyday sipping. This Hojicha is particularly good with food, and is very refreshing when served cool.

This is a solid loose-leaf hojicha that would be my go-to brand for the dark roast stuff, if it weren't so hard to get my hands on it.
Pretty heavy roast for a hojicha. A good mix of stem and large leaves...brews a very dark color with a strongly roasty aroma...woody/twiggy but without being at all smoky. There's ...

A twiggy hojicha with a lot of large leaves and quite a lot of stem. Looks like roasted bancha with perhaps a bit of kukicha in the mix (more twig than typical for bancha). Looks very dark in color, but the aroma is not quite as overwhelmingly roasty as some of the dark-roast hojicha I've tried.
Brews a very dark ...

I was craving coffee the day that I had it and felt like it was a suitable replacement! It smelled and tasted roasted, and I felt like it was a little thicker than your average tea - especially surprising for a green. Overall I really enjoyed this tea and would have it again, especially if coffee is not in sight!
