Hu-Kwa Tea from Mark T. Wendell

This is an excellent tea. I am not normally a lapsang souchong enthusiast, but this one is quite compelling. Smokey, but not overpoweringly so. It's rich but mellow, with a natural sweetness. Hints of cinnamon. I have tried both the loose leaf and teabags and they are equally fine. Highly recommended.

As expected the aroma is similar to a pine forest on fire, or a freshly paved road. For those new to lapsing souchong, it might be a bit intimidating. Those who are adverse to trying because of the aroma are missing out on a wonderful cup of tea. The liquor is a deep amber color. The flavor is nice. Once brewed, the bu...

Leaves are very long and wiry. Had to pick up leaves with fingers to get into tea sack. Prepared 7.6 g in 18 oz boiled water; brewed 4 min; added 3 oz ice. Final = 2.8 g per 8 oz. Strong tea flavor; slight wulong taste. I wonder if this tea is as fully oxidized as most black teas.
The Chinese characters on the bag ...

Steam-damp leaf aroma is cassia spice & malty raisin.
The infusion maintains these notes, golden & complex, with a strong energy lingering in the throat. Broth is lightly astringent & medium bodied, with a slight honey viscosity. Warming & grounding. If blac...

This tea sorely disappointed me and left me feeling sad and empty. I thought from the description that I was going to like it, but the description was somewhere between severely misleading and blatantly wrong. Thank you to Organic Herbie for the free sample. But PLEASE, update the description for this tea because it is...

I bought this at the H-Mart in Metuchen, NJ. The label didn't give me much of an idea of what to expect; all I knew was that it was Taiwan-grown black tea and was inexpensive. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this quickly became one of my favorite teas for daily drinking. I highly recommend it and would gladly b...

I call Lapsang Souchong "campfire tea" and I love its smokey aroma. Sometimes smoke is all you taste, but not with this tea -- it has a lovely flavour behind the smoke. I don't usually buy tea on-line but this was worth the trouble.

I switched from coffee to tea a while back. I graduated to loose leaf not long ago. The only loose tea I could find was Twinings English Breakfast, which I enjoyed. Cruising the internet looking for a new teapot I came across Mark T. Wendell, which was a...

I loved this tea, which I was excited to receive very recently as a sample from Health & Tea. I love this company's offerings and each year I have continued to become more impressed with them as I've seen their catalog expand. This tea was rich but mellow, complex but smooth, and the main word I'd describe it with is...

This is the best Ruby Black tea I've ever had and among the best black teas I've ever had. I was very impressed by last year's batch, but that was broken-leaf, and this one consists of large, whole leaves, and it's in a completely different category.
The dry leaf of this is incredibly aromatic, with a sweet, vegeta...

This tea is really lovely: sweet and not bitter. It's light but still has that black tea kick. The leaves are big and tough, I had to crush them to get them into my strainer. Yummy!

Wow, not what I was expecting from a black tea in a really good way! This sample came from the Philadelphia Coffee & Tea Expo.
Brews more like an oolong, which is right up my alley. Has the strong vegetable taste of cooked greens. No bitterness at the end. Slight natural sweetness. Floral tones in the dried lea...

A sample from the Philadelphia Coffee and Tea Expo, and wow does it deliver on its name! An extremely smooth, naturally sweet, and somewhat peculiar tea, unlike any other.
The leaf is big, thick, and twisted, and takes up a huge amount of space relative to its weight. The leaf is completely unbroken, except for a ...

The aroma of these long, curly, leaves is indeed quite sweet and very rich! There are notes of honey, beet root, roasted peanuts, tobacco, and a touch of roses. I am not sure I have ever sniffed a dry leaf that was so complex and had all the aromas work together in harmony.
First steeping, well, that is certainly de...
Red Jade Tea from Eco-Cha
Style: Black Tea – Region: Nantou, Taiwan90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5

The aroma of the curly long leaves is nothing short of complex, blending rich cocoa, roasted peanuts, cloves, a bit of barley, and a woody quality. The aroma is more savory than sweet, in fact it is all savory instead of sweet, with a strong and heavy presence. This is a tea that will be noticed!
With the first sip ...

A complex, strange, evolving tea, both unexpected and a bit inaccessible. Try as I might, I cannot mentally perceive this as a black tea...it still screams oolong to me. I find I enjoy it much more if I think of it like an oolong. But, thinking about it like an oolong, it tasted too much like a Bai Hao (Oriental Bea...

This tea brews very quickly, which is convenient. It has an interesting aroma. It smells kind of like cereal. It's very strong, and a little more bitter than I would ideally like, but overall, I like it. It tastes rich and crisp, and a little bit tangy. I added cream and sugar.

The aroma of this tea is strong and bright with floral, oaky, fruity, cocoa notes, and a hint of tobacco notes. It is very complex and fades from one aroma to the other. The brewed leaves start oaky, loamy, and slightly like fresh bread and then fade to lychee tones. The liquid loses all its woody tones and is sweet an...

Another sample from the recent Philly Coffee and Tea Festival, and I'm glad I tried this one; I almost overlooked this tea company, which is newly founded, because of their name (I shy away from companies that use health claims in their marketing).
A strong, rich, and very enjoyable tea, with a strong malty aroma an...

I also found, like Synth, that this tea has a cooling quality. The aroma is malty up front, but it has a strong wintergreen quality to the aroma. Aroma is complex and hard to describe.

this is the first hong yue / ruby black i've tried.
when i sip it, i primarily get a smooth, somewhat malty taste. the aroma is sweet, but there's also something else.. something cooling. i guess it's like aromatic, volatile terpene/camphor/evergreen/eucalyptus type of a smell&feeling.
it's certainly complex, a...

The "Ne plus ultra" of Lapsang Souchongs. The high bar for all others. It is superb. Yes, it is smokey - that's what a LS is, but this has a sweet note to the aroma and that carries through into the tea, which is rich and smooth and mellow. It also keeps well. I have some I have had for 4 years and it is still won...
