English Breakfast (Teabags) from Whittard of Chelsea
Style: English Breakfast – Region: West Java, Indonesia77 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 24th, 2023
Given how unimpressed I've been with most of Whittard's offerings so far, this was a pleasant surprise. English Breakfast is their advertised "No. 01" mainstay tea since the Victorian era, at least in loose-leaf form, so presumably the bagged version shouldn't be terribly different.
Though not very strong, the dry...
Java Superior Malabar (Nr. 77) from Carstensens Tehandel
Style: Black Tea – Region: West Java, Indonesia78 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

One-litre pot at home, made from fine very dark and black curved leaves, resembling Assam. Pours clear dark copper brown (against white china) with no sediment. Clear aroma of black tea, combining good features of both Assam and Yunnan scents. Bitter, leafy flavour with mild malty notes and mild spicy hints. Medium ast...

This is certainly a robust-tasting tea. It has some iron-like tannins and malty, smoky notes. The second infusion was a bit of a letdown - it had already lost a fair amount of its flavor by then. This was not super thrilling, but it was well worth the rock-bottom price.

Appearance and aroma bring a Keemun to mind. Woodsy liquor with a solid taste, and nice rich amber color. Malty with a pleasant after taste. I think this will be easy to enjoy anytime of day. I was hesitant to buy this because some of the teas I have tried that are grown outside the 'traditional' regions, can have an a...

Style: Gunpowder Green Tea – Region: Indonesia44 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 4/5

This is one of the cheapest loose leaf teas I've ever seen, so I'm trying not to judge it to harshly, but it's just not very good. It's smoky, of course, but not too much if the temperature isn't too high. The overall flavor is vegetal, tasting like cooked carrots and green beans to me. It's pretty sour and astringent,...

The first thing that struck me is that it looks and smells exactly like gunpowder tea, even though it isn't called that anywhere. It's not a problem, I even have an idea why one might not want to market gunpowder tea as gunpowder tea (if that really is what this is). The origin and a name might sound more enticing that...

For a free sample from Upton, I was very impressed with this tea. I have not explored many black teas yet, and am not usually a huge fan of them. I prefer green and white tea. This being said, I decided to try this out since it showed up in my last shipment from Upton. I was quite surprised when I steeped my first cup....

A very enjoyable tea for a very reasonable price. I agree with Upton that it is versatile, and I found it easy to enjoy (I shared it with two others and they both also liked it). This is the second excellent Indonesian tea I've sampled recently, and I think it ties for my two favorite teas from this region.
The dry...
Java Golden Black Tea from Harney and Sons
Style: Black Tea – Region: Indonesia83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Sep. 10th, 2015
Without a doubt the best Indonesian tea I've sampled. Most like Yunnan teas, but a bit of its own thing: strong and black but with a slightly lighter body.
The dry leaf, which consists of short pieces of leaf, mostly golden in color and beautifully curled, has a strong aroma, like rye malt with a hint of spicy note...
Java Blend (Java BOP) from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Black Tea – Region: Indonesia60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 13th, 2015
A somewhat novel tea that I found paired well with bland, fatty foods, but was a little boring otherwise.
The dry leaf of this tea smelled very interesting and subtly different from other black teas. It reminded me a bit of an Assam, but had herbaceous notes and a different sort of spicy quality.

Mountain Organic Indonesian Black from Tea at Sea

The aroma of this tea is sweet and malty, there are notes of berries and raisins with a hint of roasted peanuts at the finish. I shan't deny it, the dry leaves smell quite yummy, but I do love my sweet black teas.
After that especially enjoyable sniffing, it is time for tasting! The first sip is very sweet and quite...

The aroma is sweet like honey with a touch of baking bread and flowers, also there are notes of lettuce and kelp. Steeping the tea brings out notes of minerals, orange blossoms and vegetation.
The taste is fruity, like plums, and fades to vegetal with a finish of cherry sweetness. Yummy
Mountain Organic Indonesian Oolong from Tea at Sea
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: West Java, Indonesia70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5

The aroma is sweet, like honeyed bread and green beans. There is also a hint of orchid. Once steeped the sweetness and orchid become stronger while the vegetal tones are more of an undertone.
The taste is good, mixing honey and baking bread with a touch of orchid, as it cools it takes on a savory lettuce like tone....
Indonesian Tea from Mark T. Wendell
Style: Black Tea – Region: West Java, Indonesia87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5

This is dark and earthy. It's less brisk than Indian or Sri Lankan teas, but not sweet either. As is usually the case with this merchant, the quality for the money is wonderful. I don't want this tea every day, but it is a pleasant change from routine. Good stuff!

I was surprised to find that this decaffeinated black tea is actually a single-region tea, originating in Sumatra, Indonesia.
After drinking a single-estate Darjeeling first flush for breakfast, one that I gave a 100 rating, this tea tastes pretty flavorless, but in the broader picture, it's not bad. An interesting...

Only my third tea from Java (or anywhere in Indonesia), I was excited to try this one as I have yet to get a real sense of what characterizes teas from this region.
This is a pretty average black tea. Not much about it stands out. It has a slightly more savory quality, almost hinting at smokiness. Very full-bodie...

Thank you Marlena for sharing this one!
Aroma is unique, and hard to describe, very clean and cool, yet deep. A suggestion of wintergreen, like I've only ever encountered in Ceylon teas from the Uva region. I can see the licorice and grilled vegetables Marlena describes, as well. The aroma suggests savory qualiti...

Absolutely love this tea's delicately smooth creamy flavor with slightly vegetal notes. The infusion is light green with yellow tones.
Good for multiple infusions.

As it brews, this has a licorice and grilled veggie smell. It is less malty than a Ceylon and a bit tangier. There is a very nice roasted edge to it.

aroma: slightly sweet and vegetal.
flavor: smooth, buttery, gentle. this is a quality, tasty tea.

My first Indonesian tea sampled, and I was a bit disappointed, even though I like this style of tea.
This tea is considerably less smoky than most Chinese gunpowder teas I've had...only a moderate amount of smoke. It has a cool quality to the aroma, and a tangy flavor with some bitterness. More similar in all resp...
