Thurbo Estate Second Flush FTGFOP1 Darjeeling from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Darjeeling Second Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India

45 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 18th, 2024

This is a very mild, bland tea. Lemon and sugar overwhelms it, but it is decent on its own or with a splash of milk - then it is pleasant and bready, with some mild tannins coming in to the mouthfeel. Priced too high given the quality, imo.

Darjeeling Black Tea from Rituals

Jun. 23rd, 2024

Here's another new Rituals tea for me (and this website), also first sampled at the Days Inn in Hays, KS. As usual, and even though Hays water isn't bad, I also hauled a bag home to try on my well water for fair comparison with other ratings.

Upon ripping open the foil-lined package, the smell that greeted my nos...

This tea is really good! It has a nice bready aroma and a delicate but full bodied flavor with chocolatey hints. The only reason I'm not giving it an even higher score is that it is a bit basic, however I still love basic teas when they are really high quality and good like this one. This tea is not too astringent or b...

No. 1 Tippy Orthodox GFOP Darjeeling from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

75 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
May. 21st, 2024

I decided to try something different. Instead of getting Upton's iced tea blend (which I like a lot) that is made from Ceylons and Darjeelings, why not get some Ceylons and Darjeelings and mix them together? This way I can also get to know the individual teas. This one did not let me down. It is on the mild side, b...

Darjeeling (Teabags) from Whittard of Chelsea

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

69 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 3rd, 2023

The photo is from Whittard's website where (as of this writing) 50 round, stringless bags sell for USD $9.50, not too bad for what I presume to be a decent-quality Darjeeling. [They also sell loose-leaf Darjeeling.] Mine came from a 5-bag sampler pack, each bag being of the fold-over type stapled to a string and tag....

Darjeeling FTGFOP1 Premium Blend from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

60 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 28th, 2023

This is a light and easy Darjeeling which tastes fine, but is a little lacking in body and flavor. It blends well with milk or lemon. The lightly sweet, earthy aroma of the tea leaves is its best point. Despite the impressive name, this is a pretty ordinary tea, and sells for an average price.

Feb. 24th, 2021

Part of Upton's Great Tea Race Collection, this Darjeeling crosses the finish line with a fine aroma and impressive flavor. There are notes of caramel, fresh leaves, and mild tannins. It is very expensive however - it costs 3 times the price of an ordinary Darjeeling, but does not offer 3 times the quality imo. Nice...

Half-litre pot at home, made from a sample included in the tea company's Advent Tea Calendar (2020) and consisting of fine Darjeeling leaves in all shades of green and some brown ones, too. Half-litre cup at home, made from fine small green, brown and yellow leaves. Pours clear peach yellow (against white china) with no sediment. Very mild aroma of fresh leaves, much faintier than the loose leaves themselves emit. Mild, leafy but fresh and pure flavour of black tea, with floral touches. A delicate palate,...

I suspected something was wrong with the quality (or lack thereof) of this tea when I opened up the tin and there was no scent. (Side note: The best by date isn't for about 2 years, so that's not the issue.) Some teas have a very, very light scent, though. So, I tried to suspend judgment and brewed a cup as the packagi...

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

64 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 21st, 2019

The dry tea is chopped up quite fine. It looks like a typical Darjeeling, having a range of colors from light green to a dark brown, indicating a range of oxidations. Taylor's puts 2.5 grams of tea in their bags, splitting the difference between the typical American 2 grams and the 3 grams of many English bagged teas.

May. 18th, 2019

We first found this in an estate-sale pantry. Then my wife bought another box, because she enjoyed it as a morning and midday tea, when she didn't want something quite as potent as her favorite Assam or Irish breakfast blends. Loath to pilfer her teas and disharmonize domestic tranquility, I've just had a couple bags...

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Apr. 4th, 2019

At first glance, the tea looks odd for Twinings. Twinings's loose teas are usually broken leaf, but the pieces are much larger and appear to be better quality than what goes into the teabags. The Darjeeling is different. The loose tea pieces are tiny and uniform and look exactly like what goes into the teabags. Like mo...

Darjeeling Tea from Tradition

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

88 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 12th, 2019

The oversized bags contain nearly 3g of medium-sized (for loose leaf tea) broken leaf pieces. It's definitely not a typical Darjeeling, though. Most Darjeelings are less oxidized than other black teas and tend to have more vegetal or floral aroma notes. This one's different. There's no green apparent on the leaves and ...

Kind of expensive - and it is NOT a first flush (light/sweet) Darjeeling - but it is good. Not a holy grail but a decent variety for Darjeeling - and I love Wegman's, so there's that. Twinings bagged Darjeeling (likely Autumnal Flush) is darker but smoother. This one (Wegman's Darjeeling) comes loose and brews up fu...

The dry tea has the same basic smell of other blended Darjeelings. It's smells of dry leaves in autumn, a bit oaky and of raw pecans.

I tend to find Darjeeling teas to be somewhat more delicate than I'd prefer. This one is no exception, but I also wouldn't call it weak. It's lightly astringent with a very mild bitte...

A tricky-to-brew tea that reminded me a lot of green oolongs from Taiwan, and required a lower water temperature to brew to satisfaction.

The dry leaf, quite broken, is an intense green color, like a lot of good Darjeeling first flush. It looks exactly like pictured in the company photo (I appreciate honest photogra...

Sep. 18th, 2018

With the most prominent notes being pineapple, cranberry, and lemongrass, this tea is almost like drinking tart fruit juice. I love it because of that, but I can see others disliking it for the same reason. I taste a bit of honey as well. First flush is stereotyped as floral, but I don't get a lot of that here. There a...

This actually tastes like Darjeeling: the fruity, woody notes are similar to the loose leaf Darjeeling teas I've had, and it even has that smooth muscatel flavor (or at least the flavor I taste in most Darjeeling tea that I associate with the word "muscatel"). I guess this shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did...

Lipton Darjeeling Tea used to be known as "Lipton Green Label" and is packaged for sale in India. I buy this tea as a gray market item at a local Indian convenience store.

The tea is made up of large, but broken pieces of leaf. The description says that the tea is graded TGFOP (Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe), though, which should be mostly whole leaves. There is a reasonable proportion of tips, so it is decent quality tea, but not as good as I expected from the description or the pri...

It's fine. It's just not for me. "Darjeeling" (where'd they come up with that name??) won't commit to woody, smoky, or neither. It's a little of each, and I like tea's that COMMIT to certain flavors... It's not distinctive enough, my friends. It just isn't, friends.
